what is a group interview and what do I do?
I was laid off in April. I applied for a pt sales job at a place that I like and just got the call. So--what the hell is a group interview and how do I ace it?

1. I've been to one. I found it very uncomfortable
I didn't do very well at all.

I went in a little irritated and pissed off at the very idea that they were doing a group interview in the first place.

It's like they don't think enough of their candidates to offer a one on one 5 minute interview. They herd a bunch in all at once to save time. I found it insulting.

Sorry I don't have any productive advice for you. I'd try and treat it like any other interview. It's mostly the same except they ask the question and then go around the room getting the answers.

2. thanks for the input
I think you're probably right. I know my daughter started her retail mall job with a group interview. I suspect it's the standard for retailers doing larger hiring, esp going into seasonal hiring mode. :hi:

5. When I've had them
they are usually looking for a "good fit" with the other staff.

They wouldn't interview you unless you had the basic credentials. If you get a callback it will be with the one who actually does the hiring.

I would just relax and interact normally.

7. This seems like a useful site for you:
http://jobsearchtech.about.com/od/interview/l/aa121602.htm

You need to know whether it's a "group interview" (multiple candidates)..

or a "panel interview" (two or more people asking you questions, with no other candidates).

If you're not sure, you should prepare for the latter IMO. Some good advice on the site.

8. I've done one before.
They are basically looking for your personality in a "team." They will look at whether or not you answer first when a general question is asked to the group. But on the other hand, do you hog the limelight....that's the general idea.

9. I've been on one and it involved two supervisors
and the manager of the department. I was hired but I don't think it's because of my interview skills. I had worked previously for one of the supervisors and she liked me. Unfortunately between that interview and my start date she left.

11. We do them sometimes.
Just be outgoing and upbeat. Act like you're having fun, even though it'll seem like the most pointless thing you've ever done. Do your best to get along with everyone there, especially the managers. Listen carefully to everything they say, and be sure to follow directions.

You'll do fine. :hi:
