54. Bad Ragaz is pretty
Bad. At least for the Ragazes.

Then there's Lewis Cass, of whom Howard Zinn writes - "pompous, pretentious, honored (Harvard gave him an honorary doctor of laws degree in 1836, at the height of Indian removal) - claimed to be an expert on the Indians. But he demonstrated again and again, in Richard Drinnon's words a 'quite marvelous ignorance of Indian life'." Yet there was a county named after him in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and Texas.

I was driving down the highway coming back from the scenic drive down the Columbia River Gorge and over to Mt Hood and saw the exit sign on the Freeway "Boring Oregon City" next right.

Took me a minute to realize it was two cities and not just an adjective! <wink>

71. Ah, reminds me of another state park, here in OK,
"Roman Nose"

Only it's not a Roman's nose it's named for at all but a profile of a Native American. It was a totally splendid state park, though, where my extended family met often at one point during my childhood. They had the most amazing and wonderful swimming pool I've ever seen, before or since!

Anyone ever been there or know if that park still operates?

The sign for that park used to show a chiseling of an Indian in profile with that big ole nose giving him a hawklike appearance and the proud words: ROMAN NOSE STATE PARK.

73. That MUST be Welsh, right?
My old Brit bf could have done it, he's lived in Wales for 18 years now. Sent me a book of scenic castles and maps of Wales, and the narrative and place names had words that surely could NOT be spoken, was what I thought....

I'm even a language sort of person, but I wouldn't attempt to pronounce things with so many "y's"!

And the 'y's are pronounced like 'u' or 'i' depending on where they fall in the word. It like Dutch, where the world look unpronounceable until you realize all the 'j's are really 'y's.

86. Not quite. As it was told to me...
..."Snort" was a slang term for moonshine used in those parts during a time when liquor was banned. Some guy named Buck was one of the more popular, and
best "runners" of the moonshine in Tennessee. So, people would often say, "Let's go to Bucks and get a snort." The rest, as they say, is history.
