Believe it or not, a Christopher Reeve appreciation

Yeah, he was famous for Superman. He was good in those movies. He's "my" Superman, i.e., the Superman known best by my generation.

But of all the movies he was in, his role in "The Remains of the Day" stands out in my mind as the best.

I heard him tell a story about his seeing a screening of a Merchant/Ivory film (I think it was "Howard's End"). After the screening, he went up to Ismael Merchant and said, "Any role in your next film. Please." The next film was "Remains." It was a small role, but he played it to perfection.

RIP - he died too young.

1. "Deathtrap" with Michael Caine

I didn't realize how good an actor he was before I saw that.

As for Superman, he leapt off the pages of the DC Comic. He looked like the comic book character much more so than George Reeves, although the latter had a special place in my childhood TV viewing.

3. He was the closest thing to American royalty since JFK and Jackie.

He was a handsome, talented, intellectual progressive from a distinguished New York family. He radiated the grace and charm of a prince, and the genial sincerity of a best buddy. You can probably tell I hero-worshipped him a little. I think Robin Williams eulogy to him was very apt:

"Good night, sweet prince. And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."

It was as if we'd lost a king in his prime.

I was very young when I first saw Christopher Reeve as “Superman” –perhaps as young as six or seven –but he made an impression on me from early on. He played the role with such excellence, such high quality and such depth and dimension that to me he perfectly resembled what an ideal Clark Kent/Superman would be like. But through watching his roles in other movies, I found him to be superb in bringing his characters to life

I’ve recently been researching his real life as well and I’ve found him to be just as admirable and wonderful as a human being –I admire the compassion he showed to others during his lifetime, his advocacy for progressive causes and his commitment to making the world a better place. Although still young, I am old enough to remember when he was paralyzed and the remarkable courage, strength and resilience he showed in the subsequent years. He used his remaining time on this earth to give hope, inspiration and confidence to millions of people around the globe and used his celebrity to promote research and medical testing that could improve and perhaps even save lives for generations to come. His selflessness, his compassion, his determination to help others and the resilience and strength he exuded even in times of adversity will serve as his legacy and will hopefully inspire generations to come

He was a remarkable actor and an even more remarkable person who, along with his wife, was taken away from us far too early. May they both rest in peace.
