Eighties Pop (specifically New Wave) Fans- Questions:
What do you think of No Doubt's remake of the Talk Talk song "It's My Life"? I personally like it. Gwen Stefani constantly surprises me. Everytime I think that I hate her, she and No Doubt do something that I like.

What New Wave artist would you like to see make a comeback?

What eighties New Wave song would you like to see remade, and what modern band would you like to see remake it?

What New Wave band would you most like to see in concert?

3. I like what I've heard
Only heard bits and pieces, but I think the original is the best.

That said, I have always liked Duran Duran as one of the best.

I would like to see good remakes of the following songs...

Der Kommisar - Falco
Space Age Love Song - Flock of Seagulls
Heart of Glass - Blondie
Love My Way - Psychedelic Furs
And as I said, there is a ton of good Duran stuff to try.

I don't know if anyone could do better than the originals, but if a creative enough effort is given, I'd love to see it tried.

37. Cool
I hope it's better than their last couple. I liked everything up to and including the one with Ordinary World and Love Voodoo - everything after that has been kinda mediocre.

But their 80s stuff is great!

5. I like the song but she was pretty bad the other night singing live
Edited on Fri Dec-19-03 07:35 PM by truthseeker1
I'm glad to hear the song again, but it's not as good as the original. And did you see/hear her on the billboard awards last week? She was off, really really bad. They kicked off the show with their performance and it was a bad decision. Sounded like they skipped rehearsals (either that, or she really is just tone deaf).

7. That or her monitor wasn't working
She can carry a tune and is actually a good live performer. They started out playing small bars here in Anaheim...but if one's monitor is not turned up sufficiently, then one can't hear one's own voice when performing and they are likely to go off key.

20. You know what? You're probably right
We were noticing the volume for the lead singers in most of the bands was low - or something was off and we couldn't put our finger on it exactly, but it sure seemed like that was it.

Yup. I saw him about 10 years ago in a bar in Solana Beach CA just north of San Diego (SD DUers Help! What is the name of the bar, it's very well known, in Solana Beach that has shows for touring bands that can't fill stadiums anymore, and up and coming bands? anyway.) It was a great show, made even better by the small crowds, and his mom and dad at the door selling his latest CD. I love Howard Jones.

30. My favorite...
.... new wave act hands down is the Stranglers. They recorded from the late seventies until, well, now :) but in the early 80s they did a couple of new-wave albums that are peerless (their style was not new-wave for most of their career).

One album is called "MenInBlack", a somewhat silly concept album about people on earth being grown for food by the extraterrestrial MenInBlack. Lyrically not that great but musically incredible.

Same for "The Raven", which I love despite some questionable racist/fascist lyrics.

31. R.E.M., Echo, Peter Murphy, Laid Back, Wang Chung.....
Songs I would like to see remade:
It's The End of the World - R.E.M.
Lips Like Sugar - Echo & The Bunnymen
All Night Long - Peter Murphy
White Horse - Laid Back
Dance Hall Days - Wang Chung
The Sun Always Shines on T.V. - a-ha
Metropolis - The Church
The Promise - When In Rome

I could keep going, but I better stop! As for who should remake these songs, I'll have to keep thinking about that.....

By the way, I absolutely love T.A.T.U.'s remake of The Smiths's How Soon Is Now (and Snake River Conspiracy's remake is great as well).

Actually, I like quite a few of the other tunes, but GO! is a jump-starter.

For all the commercial success L&R achieved, Bauhaus and Tones can only be appreciated by a select segment of music fans. Interesting that they are all the same guys pretty much.

On a side note, I do think Daniel Ash is a better singer than Peter Murphy.

72. Mmmm....I have to go with Peter Murphy
It may not be purely his voice, but I just love all of his music. It's so smooth and mysterious.

Daniel Ash seems to have more of a British post-punk edge going on. Still great, but between the two, I would have to go with Murphy. So maybe it's just that I prefer the goth sound a little bit more than the post-punk...or maybe it's just that I have really great memories from Murphy's music. I dunno! They're both good!!

Just for fun......
Peter Murphy favorites:
All Night Long
Cuts You Up
Indigo Eyes
Dragnet Drag
Final Solution

Love & Rockets favorites:
No Big Deal
Bound For Hell
So Alive
Yin and Yang (The Flower Pot Man)
Ball of Confusion

(This is a nice diversion from obsessing over politics :))

65. I miss Thomas Dolby
There's a bunch of great stuff on The Golden Age of Wireless. In the last few years I've really gotten into the song "Airwaves," which I now understand as the soliloquy of an urban terrorist. And I've always liked "One of Our Submarines."

I saw Peter Gabriel once in the '80s, when he was doing songs like "Jeux Sans Frontieres"-- politically astute new wave! His world beat stuff is arguably deeper but not as much fun.

And (they were closer to punk than new wave, but were really too idiosyncratic for either label) Television.

75. Kind of hard
When you're dead.

I saw them in 1985 or whatever year it was they were big. I don't remember who the lead singer was but he did an okay job.

OMD opened the show. Great set by OMD.

80. Yes, Robert Palmer - and featuring the boys from Duran Duran
John and Andy Taylor playing bass and lead guitars, as well as Tony Thompson (from the 70s group Chic) on drums. And yes, the year was 1985. (The other members of Duran Duran went off and formed Arcadia which didn't produce any hits.)

I liked Power Station's version of Bang a Gong (Get it On).
