29. The President of Iran made some comment about it
regarding Israel (I believe that yesterday was some festival in Shia Islam). Some fundies think that the Rapture will occur at about the same time as an attempt to destroy Israel, and therefore it was suggested that they thought that the Rapture would happen tomorrow.

35. It wasn't Iran, it was Bernard Lewis, the fruitcake
Bernard Lewis (famous Middle Eastern scholar whose ass Edward Said kicked) claimed in The Wall Street Journal that he believed Iraq had nukes and would use them on Israel on the anniversary of Muhammad's ascension into Heaven (Muhammad had a dream/vision that he ascended to Heaven from the Rock in Mecca, and it's a big deal in Shi'i tradition).

I think Lewis is old-fashioned racist, myself. He approaches the Middle East purely from a western perspective, and sees Islam with all the prejudice of westerners. Never liked him much. Judge for yourself.

http://www.opinionjournal.com/extra/?id=110008768

"In Islam, as in Judaism and Christianity, there are certain beliefs concerning the cosmic struggle at the end of time--Gog and Magog, anti-Christ, Armageddon, and for Shiite Muslims, the long awaited return of the Hidden Imam, ending in the final victory of the forces of good over evil, however these may be defined. Mr. Ahmadinejad and his followers clearly believe that this time is now, and that the terminal struggle has already begun and is indeed well advanced. It may even have a date, indicated by several references by the Iranian president to giving his final answer to the U.S. about nuclear development by Aug. 22. This was at first reported as "by the end of August," but Mr. Ahmadinejad's statement was more precise.

What is the significance of Aug. 22? This year, Aug. 22 corresponds, in the Islamic calendar, to the 27th day of the month of Rajab of the year 1427. This, by tradition, is the night when many Muslims commemorate the night flight of the prophet Muhammad on the winged horse Buraq, first to "the farthest mosque," usually identified with Jerusalem, and then to heaven and back (cf Koran XVII.1). This might well be deemed an appropriate date for the apocalyptic ending of Israel and if necessary of the world. It is far from certain that Mr. Ahmadinejad plans any such cataclysmic events precisely for Aug. 22. But it would be wise to bear the possibility in mind."

A passage from the Ayatollah Khomeini, quoted in an 11th-grade Iranian schoolbook, is revealing. "I am decisively announcing to the whole world that if the world-devourers wish to stand against our religion, we will stand against their whole world and will not cease until the annihilation of all them. Either we all become free, or we will go to the greater freedom which is martyrdom. Either we shake one another's hands in joy at the victory of Islam in the world, or all of us will turn to eternal life and martyrdom. In both cases, victory and success are ours."

In this context, mutual assured destruction, the deterrent that worked so well during the Cold War, would have no meaning. At the end of time, there will be general destruction anyway. What will matter will be the final destination of the dead--hell for the infidels, and heaven for the believers. For people with this mindset, MAD is not a constraint; it is an inducement.

How then can one confront such an enemy, with such a view of life and death? Some immediate precautions are obviously possible and necessary. In the long term, it would seem that the best, perhaps the only hope is to appeal to those Muslims, Iranians, Arabs and others who do not share these apocalyptic perceptions and aspirations, and feel as much threatened, indeed even more threatened, than we are. There must be many such, probably even a majority in the lands of Islam. Now is the time for them to save their countries, their societies and their religion from the madness of MAD."

That whole 'love your neighbor' thing seems to REALLY
stick in their craws. They would DISAPPEAR without their HATE.

Not to mention his position on mixing religion and commerce.

And that "judge not" stuff? They can't go a frickin' HOUR without
judging someone. And oddly, they NEVER judge anyone to be superior.
What are the odds of THAT?

Even if I were to believe in the Rapture, I think it's arrogant to think we could predict when Jesus would come back to earth and rapturize people. I highly doubt God is monitoring the Rapture Index and telling Jesus "Sorry Rapture index is only at 158, but the moment it hit's 175 you're heading back to earth"

13. They are so ridiculous, talking about all the things they aren't taking...
What utter horseshit. I am at a loss as to how perfectly normal people can believe that, suddenly, they will be whooshed right up into the air. It sounds like something from a fantasy novel I might have read at age 7.

It is a mind like one of theirs that allows true evil to spread across the earth: they are too busy worrying about tomorrow to pay attention to all the things that need doing today.

Most mainstream Christians do not believe in the Rapture; in fact the Rapture wasn't even a concept until the late 1800s.

22. For 86 years...
For 86 years, Red Sox fans kept thinking that "this year is our year" to win the World Series. For 86 years, they ended up disappointed, but I'm guessing most of them still stayed Red Sox fans.

They finally got rewarded in 2004 after the 86 year wait.

I'm guessing the rapture folks are similar, only since the idea of "rapture" has been around for over 1000 years(instead of 120-130 like baseball), their scale of time is a bit longer.

24. Try 1861 (or 1830 if you go with the girl's vision)
Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 09:28 AM by LynneSin
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapture

Among Christians who do believe in a Rapture, there is substantial debate about the timing of the rapture relative to the seven-year Tribulation. Critics of a "Pre-Tribulation" Rapture, the belief that the Rapture will occur prior to the Tribulation, often attribute that doctrine to a 15-year old Scottish-Irish girl named Margaret MacDonald (a follower of Edward Irving) who had a vision in 1830 and published in 1861. Some pre-Tribulation proponents maintain that the earliest known extra-biblical reference to the "pre-Tribulation" rapture is from a sermon by "pseudo-Ephraem", attributed to a fourth century Byzantine, Ephraem of Nisibis, in which he is quoted as saying, "For all the saints and Elect of God are gathered, prior to the tribulation that is to come, and are taken to the Lord lest they see the confusion that is to overwhelm the world because of our sins<2> <3>." However, there are opposing views to the interpretation of this writing<4> <5>. There are at least three other Pre-Tribulation references prior to Macdonald - in a book published in 1788, in the writings of a Catholic priest Emmanuel Lacunza in 1812, and by John Darby himself in 1827, <6>. Nonetheless, both the book published in 1788 and the writings of Lacunza have opposing views regarding their interpretation as well.

<<<<snip>>>>>

Many Christians who do not agree that there will be a pre-tribulation Rapture of the Church point out that it is a relatively new doctrine, first popularized in the 1800s and elaborated on subsequently. There are whole denominations holding this view, such as the Roman Catholic Church. Eastern Orthodox do not accept it either, as such a thing as "rapture" was never taught by any of their bishops, from the beginning. Instead of "being taken up into Heaven", these churches follow the scriptures (such as Isaiah) clearly describing a physical Kingdom of Heaven that will be on a renewed Earth, following the Great Tribulation, the Resurrection of the Dead, and Judgment Day.

25. Uh, yeah
the idiot who came up with the Rapture was in the early to mid 1800s, NOT someone 2 millennia ago. As a matter of fact, I'm reading several books right now that pretty much make the fundie out to be complete asses and gullible fools. The main things they believe in, including the literal interpretation of the bible is a fairly recent invention, early 1800s for that one, too.

The book I'm currently reading is called "Stealing Jesus: How Fundamentalism Betrays Christianity" and goes into great detail the various shit these whackos believe. They have warped the bible and the teachings of Jesus for a long time, but that long time only goes back 200 years, not 2000. The guy with the "rapture" called his belief "dispensational millennism" and starts with the rapture, and then 1000 years of Christ ruling on earth. I have a couple more books to read as well, discussing how fundies are completely and totally among the stupidest people on earth, not because they just are, but because they refuse to acknowledge that all their beliefs are nothing but shit.

32. You are right there
'End of the World' belief is not uncommon, hell I see it coming just with the way we are treating our planet and creating war. But that is separate from the rapturists who believe that they'll just poof up into heaven without a moment's notice. If anything it seems like a false movement created to scare people into being more fanatical about their religion since the belief says that only 144k people would actually be rapturized. Knowing that there are 6billion+ people on this planet, it means you'd have to be pretty darn faithful and pure in order to be one of the 144k.

1) The Iranian Prez believes that he is being led by God to usher in the 12th Imam. He is not stupid ~ you don't achieve the position that he has through stupidity! ~ but I do believe that he is either insane or demonically possessed. He is VERY arrogant and believes that God is on his side which, in my book, is a very dangerous combination! He promises to "light up the sky over Jerusalem" and that the Muslims would experience a "day of joy" on Aug 22. We need to be in prayer for the safety of Jerusalem!!

Oh, the IRONY considering that these people support *.

37. Just to correct the ignorance of the post on the other board
It wasn't the Iranian president who said he would "light up the sky over Jerusalem." It was a critic of the Iranian president, a Sunni Muslim exiled in the US, who said that the Iranian president would light up the sky. He was adding words to Ahmadinejad's promise to give an answer to the UN on nuclear negotiations on August 22nd, when the UN had ordered a response by the "end of August." As we saw, Ahmadinejad did give a response before that day, saying he was ready to negotiate after test firing a short-range missile. The hyperbole was created in the west, not in Iran.
