Remember Tough Guy who killed Cubby the tame bear?
The name of his band is Montgomery Gentry. I watched a video of his on Youtube and it reminded me of everything I find distasteful about this brand of country music music, the imagery and the philosophy.

YUCK.

1. He's even a bully in the video.
I could pick those lyrics apart in about a thousand different ways, but I'd be preaching to the choir here.

2. I'd love to read your analysis but I would never ask anyone
to subject themselves to thinking about that video for an extended period of time. :)

5. Okay, you talked me into it.
Edited on Sun Aug-20-06 09:33 AM by Heidi
My comments to Troy Gentry are in italic. :eyes:

Put me on a mountain, way back in the backwoods (No objection here. I'm totally okay with ya'll going into seclusion)
Put me on a lake with biggin on the line
Put me 'round a campfire cookin' something I just cleaned (and killed and falsely registered as a "wild kill. Enjoy the federal charges, bully.)
You do your thing, I'll do mine (Right.)

I ain't tradin' in my family's safety (Your family isn't unsafe. Fear-monger much?)
Just to save a little gas (Yes, we all see the gas-guzzler you're driving in the video. :eyes: )
And I'll pray to God any place, any time (Matthew 6:5-6: "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men....when thou prayest, enter into thy closet and when thou has shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret....")

And you can bet I'll pick up the phone if Uncle Sam calls me up (That's a pretty safe promise to make, since you're 39 years old and rich, thus unlikely to ever be drafted.)
You do your thing, I'll do mine (Right.)

Hey, I'll worry about me (First and foremost.)
You just worry about you (Nobody's trying to take away your right to medical privacy, to indoctrinate your children in the public schools, prohibiting you from marrying the partner of your choice, or forcing you to choose between food for your kids or gas for your car, Troy.)
And I'll believe what I believe (And support a president who tells the rest of us what to believe.)
And you can believe what you believe too (As long as we don't talk about it or attempt to practice it in any public way, right?)

I ain't gonna spare the rod (Duly noted.)
Cuz that ain't what my daddy did (And we all see how well you turned out.)
And I sure know the difference between wrong and right (Then there's really no excuse for your lawbreaking or self-aggrandizing patriotism, is there?)
You know, to me it's all just common sense (Like, if you want to shoot a bear, just plunk down $4,000, buy one, shoot it and falsely tag it as a wild animal in violation of state and federal law. Common sense like that, right?)
A broken rule, a consequence (The maximum penalty for the crime for which you've been indicted is five years in federal prison and a $20,000 fine.)
You do your thing, I'll do mine (Riiiiiiiiiiight.)

Hey, I'll worry about me (And the terra-ists, and the evil liberals, and selling records, and shooting tame bears)
You just worry about you (That's a full-time job with guys like you around.)
And I'll believe what I believe (Haven't we already covered this?)
And you can believe what you believe too (Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight.)

I'm gonna keep on working hard (Word-up, bubba. One has to _start_ working hard in order to "keep on" working hard. Just sayin'.)
Make my money the old-fashioned way (I guess the "old fashioned way" is riding to fame and fortune on mom's coattails, right, son of Bobbie Gentry?)
I don't wanna piece of someone else's pie (How about someone else's bear?)
I don't wanna piece of nobody else's pie (Riiiiiiiiiight.)
If I don't get my fill on life I ain't gonna blame no one but me (Not even Osama bin Laden? Saddam Hussein? The evil liberals?)
You do your thing, I'll do mine (Riiiiiiiiiight.)

You ain't gonna be my judge (True. That's what the state and federal judiciaries are for.)
Cuz my judge will judge us all one day (Let me know how that turns out.)
You do your thing, I'll do mine (Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.)

14. I swear, that is exactly the type of song that makes me despise Country
music.

Nice analysis, but what a shitty, close-minded, song by some uneducated redneck. How does that shit ever made to a recording?

15. Troy Gentry's mother was pretty well known at one time in country music.
Bobbie Gentry ("Ode to Billie Joe") is his mother, and his stepfathers were casino "magnate William F. Harrah novelty singer-songwriter Jim Stafford." Sounds like Troy Gentry is a self-made man of the Republican sort. :eyes:

17. You're assuming he can read
and write. That's a pretty big "if" in this guy's case, and I bet he'd be first in line to cut funding for literacy programs. :grr:

(Hi, my friend. )

12. Exactly.
I'm a huge Leonard Cohen fan; I sort of enjoy using my mind a bit when I'm listening to music. It beats the hell out of being force-fed someone else's religious and political obsessions.

9. I knew that Stephan Colbert's lunatic rants against
bears would someday cause a tragedy like this.

Oh and thanks for posting those lyrics, I just threw up in my mouth. I had no concept of 'terrible' until I read them.

20. What is disgusting is that some at YouTube are comparing
him to outlaw country such as Johnny Cash. Sorry, but outlaw country was and is anti-establishment, anti-corporation and anti-rethuglican. It is not this self-adulatory, faux patriotic bovine excrement that this nut pukes out his mouth.
