Poll question: most right wing large city in America
I was thinking of this today while I realized how much I hated this town. I've been at home for the past week in Bismarck, ND, which while is only really large by ND standards (pop. about 55k), is full of backwards hicks, old people who hate anyone under 40 for no reason other than being under 40, and kids who act like total jackasses and throw shit from cars for no reason whatsoever. and of course lots of fundie and right wing bumper stickers, even a confederate flag one today (why would you have a confederate flag this far north?). i could tolerate this place back in high school when i had lots of friends around, but now i realize how there's nothing to do and how boring and awful it is.

so which large city is the most right wing?

22. Darrell Issa is the Rep for the California 46th district (San Diego)
He basically paid for the recall of Davis straight out of his own pocket. It shook out to about a dollar for each recall petition vote. He did it because he wanted to run for the seat, but Arnold torpedoed his ass. Anyway, that's San Diego.

San Diego is really just West West Texas. I love it here, but I hate all the non-stop puking right wing shows I have to endure. The O.C. ain't much better.

32. Agreed -- grew up about a half-hour outside
In a small town, which wasn't a college town and was, therefore, conservative by nature (at least, it seems most small towns in Ohio are conservative by nature, if they're not college towns). It's not much better slightly north, but it's enough better I don't spend hours on end wishing I didn't have to live here.

8. Hello? The clear answer is Provo, Utah!!!!
Even Salt Lake is getting to be a more diverse town, but Provo/Orem has got to be, hands-down, the most right-winged, Mormon, Republican town.... its home to BYU! Don't even get me started about all that, LOL!

39. SLC vs Provo
Of the places on the poll I picked Tulsa, which is the televangelist capitol of the world.

Provo's by far the most right wing town of any size in the U.S. though. Definitely hostile territory. The only towns I can think of that are even more right wing than Provo are miniscule little hamlets that are too small to count.

Salt Lake City is reasonably friendly and IMHO the most underrated place for liberals in the entire U.S. Part of the reason is a lot of Utah's liberals, and non-Mormons, wind up migrating to SLC and flaunt their liberalism and/or dislike of the LDS church. The only other liberal strongholds in Utah are in Moab (lots of desert rats and Edward Abbey fans), and parts of Carbon County (United Mine Workers stronghold) and Summit County (ski bums and homesteaders). Here's a typical Salt Lake City precinct's vote in the 2000 elections: Gore 385, Bush 112, Nader 125. SLC has gotten a bad rap for too long, I'm just standing up for them. It's most of the rest of Utah that deserves the neanderthal reputation the state has. SLC is a more friendly place for liberals than *any* place in Colorado, Arizona, or Nevada, including any of the liberal strongholds in those states. It ain't San Francisco or Ithaca but lined up against the rest of the southwest, it's the place.

46. Provo/Orem (Utah County) is "major" . . .
. . . majorly creepy I might add. I know. I'm trapped here at the moment.

Utah County has a population of 387,817 as of July 1, 2002.
Almost a year and half later, I would venture to guess that figure has risen significantly.

http://eire.census.gov/popest/data/counties/tables/CO-EST2002/CO-EST2002-01-49.php

Utah County is so far right that republicans in the rest of the state are leery of it:

"With their staunchly conservative views, Utah County politicians often are seen as too extreme to be mainstream gubernatorial candidates.
<snip>
Other political pundits, however, say Utah County's time may have come. They note that Leavitt lost the Salt Lake County vote in the past election and may not have won re-election if not for his large margins of victory in Utah and Davis counties."

aQuArius and ldoolin know of what they speak. :scared:

24. Another call out for San Diego
But I have been to many midsized cities in the West/Midwest (50k-200k) and Bismarck is up there, along with Medford OR, Reno NV, Fresno CA (Freeperville USA), Billings MT, Idaho Falls ID and more.

But, there is one place that is in my opinion the single most redneck, conservo-hateful, flag-wavin', racist, queer-hating city in America, and until I visit a worse place, it absolutely has to be TRI-CITIES WARSHINGTON, home of the Hanford High School Bombers. The Bombers logo is, I shit you not, a MUSHROOM CLOUD.

And makes us sane Floridians want to tear out our hair in despair.

I used to think it was a conservative city - but having been there a few times it's actually much more left leaning than Texan cities (save Austin)

Mormons, despite their right-wingedness, just can't find it in themselves to adopt the meaner edge of Republicanism, even if Orrin Hatch can.
