Your parents' favorite songs that made you batshit crazy
Here's a video of The Auctioneer by Leroy Van Dyke, from 1956, a song which my father used to sing tunelessly (he's tone deaf) while he washed the dinner dishes and I rinsed them.

When I was 10, I finally ordered the 45 rpm record for my dad's birthday.

Leroy Van Dyke.

4. Wasted Days and Wasted Nights by Freddie Fender
Wasted days and wasted nights,
I have left for you Behind
for you don't belong to me,
your heart belongs to someone else.

Why should I keep loving you,
when I know that you're Not true?
And why should I call your name,
when you're to blame
for making me Blue?

Don't you remember the days
that you went away and left me,
I was so lonely
cried for you only,
my love.

Why should I keep loving you,
When I know that you are not true?
And why should I call you're name
when you're 2 blame
4 makin me blue

Don't you remember the days,
that went away and left me
I was so loney
prayed 4 you only,
My LOVE

Why should I keep loving you,
when I know that you are not true
And why should I call your name
when you're 2 blame,
4 making me blue

5. "Young Girl" from Gary Puckett and "Rainy Nights" by Eddie Rabbit
Both songs played often enough to make me want to kill myself when I hear them now.

Interesting story...I'm at a kids' paradise. About 12 years old and at Disneyworld. What happens while we're there? Gary fuckin' Puckett is playing at Epcot Center and we all have to accompany my mother to watch this old, creepy crooner sing that shitty song. Ruined my day.

7. Both of my parents have decent taste normally
but sometimes my mom gets real depressed in the wintertime and listens to Blue Christmas over and over again until somebody makes her take her meds for the sake of everybody else's mental health.

I fucking hate that song.

Especially "Hotel California," "Life In The Fastlane," "James Dean," "Desperado," "Duelin' Dalton," "Peaceful Easy Feeling," and "Take It To The Limit."

20. I absolutely LOVE every one of those songs, except "James Dean."
I'm amazed at the Eagles-bashing here. Great band to sing along to on cross-country drives.

Unlike most of the so-called "artists" today, the Eagles knew something about melody and harmonies.

To each their own, I guess.

16. My mom's music collection consists of...
The BeeGees, Elvis, Cher and Dido. That's about it. So basically, all of her music annoys me.

She's kind of okay, if you just listen to the stupid funny shit she says without realizing it.

17. My parents have pretty good taste in music. Maybe a little heavy
on Pat Boone. My father, though, surprises me still. He was scanning channels the last time I saw him, and stopped on some album cut from Norah Jones. He's very blue collar and rarely expresses his own preferences in anything, and I sometimes forget his passion for music. He grew up in New Orleans, and always had accordians, pianos and guitars around the house. Never learned to play any of them, but I'm starting to realize how much he wanted to.

21. "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot.
I guess I bought this 45 for my dad when I was 13 or 14. We had a Magnavox console stereo with an auto-repeat function on the phonograph. My dad would put "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" on autorepeat and fill a full afternoon with that droning song.

Alberto Gonzalez has approved this technique for use at Gitmo.

My dad loved him, James Taylor, Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, etc.

My mom on the other hand rocked out to The Who, so there you go. :D

25. None.
I tended to like what my parents played, although I've never understood why they didn't collect Frank Loesser musicals to go with their Rodgers and Hammerstein et al.

I have a happy memory of my father driving me to the airport while we played tapes of big band music.

And my stepmother introduced me to opera, for which I will be forever grateful.

You've picked my ONE non-dysfunctional area of family life!
