Pet Peeve: Calling Sept. 11..... "nine-one-one"

nine-one-one refers to the emergency phone number.
September Eleventh refers to the day the NYC twin towers were collapsed.

How come I hear educated people referring to Sept 11, as nine-one-one...and not even realizing what it is they just said.
It would be like calling someone by a different name..to their face..repeatedly..and not apologizing nor making any attempt at correcting what you just said.

Gets me riled at their ignorance and lack of "hearing" what they are really saying.

...because of the 9-1-1 connection and the fact that the number is drilled into everyone's mind and posted at every phone. Kind of a psychological warfare thing. And even though I always say "nine-eleven," I always think 9-1-1.

the fact that we continue to refer to it as 9/11 at all. We need to call it what it is: the 2001 terror attacks. Not some non-emotive number.
