Why "Spider" Hole?

I mean, lots of things live in holes. Why was Saddam's little place called a "spider" hole?

Why not "Hidey-Hole"?

1. In South Vietnamese Villages

Villagers used to hide in holes in their huts covered by sticks or mats when GIs or VC showed up.

These holes were also havens for spiders, etc.

2. It is named for "Trap door spiders".

The military uses the term to mean a hole with a covered opening that is just large enough for one man. There is a spider called the trap door spider that makes that kind of hole and has a cover conceaing the hole.

and it was LOL funny. They had some generic MSNBC talking head climbing into a full scale model of the hole (from Ikea) :D. She was quoted as saying, "I'm a full grown woman, not a full grown man!" and the "expert" said, "It's a hidey-hole". Catch the rerun if you missed it.
