Why didn't J.C. Watts go into the NFL?

I mentioned to my husband that he was a football player and his response was he must not of been very good. So I looked him up. He seems to have had a stellar college career -- why didn't he go the the NFL? Just curious.

Well, it would explain his political leanings.

In all seriousness, he was drafted by the Jets, but they wanted him as a running back (in the days before black quarterbacks) so he skipped off to the Canadian Football League, where he could play quarterback. He wasn't half bad under the circumstances.
