Actually both my little brother and myself are Longshoreman. My older brother however is a Los Angeles Deputy Sheriff. But he's totally opposite from me though. He's a total die hard Republican conservative who you can't say anything to about his party or Bush...

How did you get to be longshoremen? And do you like it?

How did I get to be a longshoreman? Twelve years ago after I was laid-off from McDonnell Douglas, I went to the "Casual" longshoreman dispatch hall. At that time, anybody could wait around to see if there were any left over dock jobs that the Longshoreman and Casuals didn't fill -- didn't happen often. Whenever there were any jobs left-over, you could drop your drivers' license in a box and hope you got picked.

After you got 40 experience hours doing that you got a letter in the mail to become a casual. Then after two to four years when you were in the group of top one hundred experience hours casuals and when the ILWU union hall needed more longshoreman, you got a letter in the mail to switch from being a casual to being a longshoreman and moving from the casual dispatch hall to the longshoreman hall.

The process is basically the same with the exception of there's no more just anyone dropping drivers' licenses in a box. Now every once and a while, a certain number of applications are made up.
