I just had lunch at Zippy's!
We have more Zippy's out here than we do Cracker Barrels and Olive Gardens combined!

Of course, the islands are so far blessedly free of Cracker Barrels and Olive Gardens (and snakes), but still, there are 23 of the buggers, on an island of 600 sq. mi., so I'm thinking that counts as a chain...

1. I am so jealous of you.
My neighbor across the street moved here from Honolulu about 10 years ago (wife wanted to be with family, hard to argue with that), and we went to Maui three years ago.

I have never been in such a magical place. Everyone was so incredible nice and so friendly. We had an amazing time. The food was to die for. We had the humahumappuappuappuaa-a, (or something like that) right out of the water and it was simply exquisite.

I would LOVE to retire there. Ha'waii is amazing. Such incredibly nice folks.

:hi:

3. The humuhumunukunukuapua'a isn't a food fish as far as I know
but the 'opakapaka (pink snapper) is. Perhaps you had that. But if you did, it wasn't at Zippy's, for there are no Zippy's on Maui. All 23 are on O'ahu. :-)

5. That's it! I couldn't remember how to say it!!
No, it was on Maui at the Grand Wailea. That restaurant is amazing. Beautiful setting, fantastic food.

I am desperate to go back.

2. What's a Zippy's like? We have a Zip's Diner, but I have not
heard of Zippy's. Is it a regional burger chain?

4. It is a cross between a regional burger chain and a plate lunch joint
sort of a culinary safe space, perfect for groups that include newcomers. Today we all had burgers, but they also have local-style stuff like saimin (noodle soup), as well as their famous chili (served over rice!)
