Good:

--The ocean, and all the beaches and islands that go along with it. 'Nuff said.

--Seeing snow for the first time every year, and waking up in the morning to virgin snow in the backyard...Just beautiful. Now, by February I'm damned sick of it all...But in December it's nice.

--We're really very lucky in that, when something like a shootout happens in Portland, even, it's a rare occasion the news will cover for days. In other words: Not so very much urban crime. I've never heard any gunshot other than a hunting shot.

--Summers that, while they can be nasty to a Mainer, are never nearly as bad as those in the south, especially the southwest.

--Native corn, blueberries, and strawberries, and local seafood.

Fall foliage gets honorable mention.

Bad:

--One of the whitest states in the nation, so unless you're in Portland, "diversity" is one'a dem furrin concepts.

--Mosquitoes. Absolutely horrendous mosquitoes.

--Taxes SUCK, or so I am told. Maine will tax your heart out.

--Public transportation? Easy access to things? What's that?

--It's not as blue as you think it is.

1. Very, very little violent crime. Local news around here is generally positive. Lack of crime means most stories are done about the good things that are happening in the area. It is a very good place to raise kids because of this too.

4. Most people are not snobby (even the few rich ones).

1. Easy access to some beautiful territory out there in the desert and the mountains.

Plenty to do in terms of music, 'cultural' events, et al., not that I ever avail myself of much of it -- been to a few comped shows, though, and enjoyed them (shoot...I'd even have paid for some of them, though many of the big shows on the Strip are obscenely priced nowadays as is almost everything else in today's corporate Vegas).

3. Rent here is far more sane than it is in Los Angeles and, once you get off the Strip and Downtown, the city's not unlike a SoCal town (with all the good and not-so-good thereof).

4. Girls! Girls! Girls! I haven't yet been sampling in earnest, but there's no shortage of opportunity for someone in my position and, as it is, I get to hold and be fondled by more women than Wilt Chamberlain even dreamed of. As the real Elvis said "tough way to make a living, boys."

5. Where else can I make a living acting like someone else, beyond the confines of a movie set, and have it be my sole source of income? Hell, where else can I walk around in a studded jumpsuit and not be either (a) a member of the reunited Commodores or (b) locked up?


On the flipside, it gets a bit toasty here (this would be massive understatement), there's no sense of loyalty among many (at least in the casino and entertainment realms and thereabouts...backstabbing sons of bitches, and in this group I include the cadre of arrogant Elvises here that we nicer Elvises have to contend with), and the blind focus on short-term gain of the Almighty Dollar is too overwhelmingly prevalent. Also, casino managers and the like tend to have no imagination or vision and wouldn't know a good idea if it hit them repeatedly over the head (they also tend to be missing senses of humor), possibly because they've come up through the ranks from being dealers and it's drummed into dealers that they are never, ever to use their initiative or stray one iota from the rigid protocol given them.

Vegas is not what it used to be, and the 'Sin City' theme they're pushing these days (after the family-friendly one fizzled) is just cynical marketing of something the corporations destroyed, something that hasn't really been here since the Mafia left the building 20 or so years ago. This is an uptight town, overregulated in many senses though still run by and for the casinos as it was under the influence of the Mafia...the whole freewheeling and spontaneous Vegas idea is a carefully marketed image that's as false as most other things in this town. In many ways this is a sick place -- I think of it as being something of a sampler of (simultaneously) the best and the worst that the United States has to offer.

2) Ollie's Troley. There's only 1 in the city, and I don't know who prominent they are in the rest of the US, but there are few beef products that match the Ollie Burger.

3) Very solid Democrats. Oh, sure Sen. Mitch "Money" McConnell and Rep. Anne "Mo' Money" Northup are in office, but John Yarmuth, whom you're going to love, is taking Northup's seat this November, and mayor Jerry Abramson has done a good job of running our city, and the mayor before him---another Democrat---was responsible for a kick-ass skate park being built here.

4) Slugger Field. Our AAA baseball team, the Bats, plays at one of the nation's most beautiful ball parks. It almost makes you forget that the players will someday likely have to be Cincinnati Reds.

5) Kentucky Derby. For one week, Louisville becomes a den of Dionyssian mischief. The world watches a horse race, and we watch the ceiling after 7 days of drinking.

1. It's affordable. You can buy a buttload of house here (within the city) for $80-100,000. You can't live in a garage in San Francisco (or, for that matter, Ann Arbor) for that kind of money.
2. It has nice parks. Hoyt and Bliss parks and Ojibway Island are as nice as any you'll find in any town of 62,000. And Saginaw has a pretty good children's zoo, too.
3. Saginaw's two high schools, Saginaw High and Arthur Hill, have a rivalry that goes back into the 19th Century (1894, I think). It is the oldest continuous rivalry in Michigan and, after 112 years of football, the series is just about tied. When one of the two gets to the state finals, you'll see PLENTY of alumni of the other school cheering them on.
I went to Arthur Hill. My SO Polly and my best friend Mike B both went to Saginaw High.
4. We have a river that flows north. The Saginaw is the shortest in the state (about 15 miles) but it drains the largest watershed. The river's gotten clean enough that people are pulling eight pound walleyes out of it (not bad considering Dow Chemical's World HQ/Midland complex is 20 miles up the Tittabawassee from here).
5. It's close to Detroit (98 miles), Canada (100 miles to either Sarnia or Windsor), and Up North -- which starts once you get to West Branch (say 60 miles). We're 30-odd miles east of the dead geographic center of the Lower Peninsula.

When the place isn't too busy (in the late evening) I can feel comfortable chatting with the people behind the counter. . You see, that is completely different from the grocery stores where I used to live- Tacoma. I was always looked at suspiciously, and sometimes followed around the store, because of how I dress and color my hair.
