1. Yep. Pure MDA is pretty fun though. Trippier than MDMA.

Except for heroin, coke, meth & codeine.

13. But some did.
Not all hippie folks were upper middle class dropouts from fine colleges. Coke did come into its own later--but other "bad stuff" was around, too.

(I didn't go the hard way--but knew some who did.)

27. Facts are not always "nice"
Peace, love, flowers, grass & 'shrooms were around back then. But they don't tell the whole story of "hippiedom."

...and I consider country and western to be a bare step above rotting ox carcasses.

22. and how does that make rave music good?
Is there even such a thing as a song in that genre or is it endless noise from machines?

24. I never said "good," I said "far better."
I happen to like techno music, but that still doesn't excuse putting words in my mouth.

21. Well I guess it depends on when you find them
If they've been dancing for hours they'll stink, but they can at least be relied upon to bathe regularly

26. Ah, but compilations present a biased sample.
I've always been interested in youth music. It constantly evolves and it constantly stays the same. I find it fascinating.

A few weeks ago I bought an album by a kid called Fatboy Slim. Apparently he's part of this "Rave" music movement. Now, I'm interested in how people can make such good music from so little- scratches, beats, simple sound effects, etc. But one track on this album (Palookaville?) had a sample from the "hippie" Five Man Electrical Band hit "Signs."

It was just the one line "And the sign said: long haired freaky people need not apply." Repeated over and over.

Now when that song came out, it was something of an angry protest song. And similar to something what Woody Guthrie would have written, a mix of folk music and political activism.

When Five Man Electrical Band wrote it, it was a sign (no pun intended) of anger and defiance against conformity. When Fatboy Slim samples it, it's a sign of celebration of nonconformity and how far we've come.

It's all very entertaining. Now lets dance.
