What was your very first pet!!
Mine was a rabbit. She was a beautiful Dutch Rabbit named Suess

That's not her but that's what Dutch Rabbits look like. If I didn't have cats I was seriously considering getting a rabbit

1. A dog I named Smokey after my favorite Pgh. Pirate catcher
Smokey Burgess :-).

Smokey was a female chow/collie mix. I don't have any pictures of her :-(, but she was really a pretty dog.

2. when I was a little girl
I had a pet tortoise. I don't know what kind, where he went to or anything. I was probably about 5 or 6 years old at that time. I can't remember a lot of detail about it though :(

4. My first pet was seven cats and a dog
Scruffy, Hopeless and Socks. And a dog named Freckles. Shortly after that a mother cat showed up and had three kittens and we kept all of them, bringing to total up to eight animals. I think I'm destined to be a little old cat lady! I just have one right now, tho'. ^___^

5. A cat named Meatball
with similar coloring as your rabbit, amazing that I remember that. It's one of the few clear memories I have from when I was 3 to 6 years old.

Apparently he bit me at one point and my parents got rid of him. From what I can tell from my memory and the little info my parents gave me about it I think it was really my fault for messing with him while he was trying to eat.

6. turtle named Arnie after the taxicab drive who brought us home
my mother didn't drive and we had too much stuff to take on the bus. I must've been 5. Arnie was little and green and had red bits by his ears. He was sooooo sweet I just loved him soooo much. My little sister was jealous of Arnie and took him out to play with him and left him on the carpet and we found him dried up behind the curtain in the livingroom. RIP Arnie. I got Arnie2, but it wasn't the same.

They sold turtles with paint on their shells but my mommy said that was a bad thing to do, it hurt those turtles. She wouldn't let me buy one and rescue it, but we got Arnie instead. Thank you Mr.Arnie taxicab driver.

He shared a bowl with my sister's fish, Bubble. Splash was pretty placid but Bubble was wild; he would jump out of the bowl regularly.

9. A Manchester Terrier named "Tiny"
Edited on Fri Jul-07-06 10:22 AM by KansDem
She was acquired when I was very little, so I don't remember too much about the early years. She was named "Tiny" because, as a pup, she could fit in the palm of your hand. When I got older and could appreciate a dog (you know, like in "a boy and his dog"), Tiny was growing old and crotchety. She was becoming "mangy" and blind, and she tended to snarl and bite whenever I tried to pet her. Small growths started appearing on her and she wasn't walking very well when we finally had her put to sleep.

I have cats now, and for some reason never had the desire to have another dog...

edited for clarity

12. I had a small turtle
I was so proud of that little guy. His name was Turtle. He had a small clear plastic aquarium to live in that had a raised area in the center with a plastic palm tree. I will never forget going to the pet store to buy him. The owner went back to get me my turtle. Mom walked around a bit and then stopped next to one of the aquariums. She looked at it, screamed and ran from the store. The aquarium had a wreathing mass of lots of some sort of snake in it - mom could not stand snakes. I had to go out to the car, get money from her to pay for my turtle and go back in, all the while people staring at me. Mom never did warm up to that turtle. Of course, there really wasn't much to warm up to, personality wise - although I swore that Turtle recognized me and came when I called. Turtle lived about 6 months and when he died, my dad decided that it was time for a dog. So a few months later we got our first German Shepherd puppy, a beautiful black and silver male with the name Col. Hans von Grossland (he was bred at the Grossland Kennels - which was run by an Irish guy with family still in Ireland. Mom, dad and I were going to Ireland that summer to meet our relatives and visited my dog's breeder's brother as well.

13. guinea pig
We just called it "guinea"

He lived twice the usual expectancy, and was quite a character. He lived in an old dresser drawer we had on the floor in the hallway, and though he gnawed the side of the drawer down considerably through the years, he never once left his drawer on his own.

He used to squeal when anyone would open the refridgerator door.

He LOVED bananas and watermelon.

14. Rascal
He was a part-Scottie, part-? little dog. Soooooo cute, sooooo sweet. My parents got him the year I was born and he lived until I was 16. He used to sleep on my bed every night, and it was a really high bed. When he was younger he could jump up despite his short little legs, but as he got older he'd wait at the side of the bed until I lifted him up.

Mocha was my mother's beloved, and she died of old age when I was five or six. T.C. (short for Top Cat Wilson--) was my father's companion, I believe, and he(?) (the cat, not my father :)) was run over by a car when I was four.

When I was three we got an African Grey Parrot. She pwns my current lazy cats. :D

I remember horses, dogs, cats, parrots, rabbits, goats and pigs for as long as I can remember. I think it really enriched my wonder as a child. Wouldn't trade it for the world AND I never had any allergies! Cute rabbit...I had a tricolor I named Cotton Candy Brown Sugar when I was 5 :)

22. A gray tabby named Elizabeth
by Mom, ever the Anglophile.

Elizabeth, or "Pizzily-doo", was, shall we say, rather high-strung. After we moved from Md. to Conn., it took us another couple of months to get her up there. After only another few months, she departed, never to be seen again... on her way back to Md., one hopes. (Stranger things have happened with cats.)

23. We got a German Shepard mutt named JoJo
when I my brother and I were 5.

My parents never trained that dog and barely paid any attention to him so he got kind of wild. When he got out of the house he would run everywhere at top speed, including into traffic. He bit someone. And then my dad had him put to sleep.

My parents never should have brought an animal into that house. I still kind of resent what happened with JoJo.

26. A huge mongrel named 'Puppy'
He wasn't supposed to grow very big, but we could ride him in the end.

He was too big for our yard, so we gave him away and got a collie named Ginger (I named her, after the Gilligan's Island character). I was about 5 or 6 when we got her.

We also had lots of gerbils - my brother, sister and I all had them growing up. :-)

I also had worms for pets, though I had an awful habit of accidentally pulling them apart. :scared:

My brother and I named her. She was abandoned out in the country, my grandfather knew the people who took her in and brought her home to us. She was a very gentle and sweet mutt that lived a long time. She staid with my grandfather when we moved but I think she was 16 when she died.

29. A dog named Sam.
She was half dachsund, and half cocker spaniel.

My father bought her for my mother on Valentine's Day 1969, at a pet shop in Fort Bragg, NC. I was one month old, and she was about five weeks old. I still have the receipt. He paid $20.

She was a great dog, and my best friend as a kid. She died when I was 10.

33. Clipper, a thoroughbred boxer
My mom would put me in my playpen outside in the summer and Clipper would watch over me. One day the mailman got too close and Clipper bit him. It all turned out ok, though, cuz even though we had to get rid of him he went to live on a farm and could run free there. THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE TRUE STORY AND DON'T TELL ME OTHERWISE.

Flippy! He adopted me when he was 10 years old. Belonged to a neighbor who gave him over to me because Flip had decided he wanted to be with me. He would come find me at the high school, would bring me presents, liked to watch TV and "hold hands" (he would actually squeeze my hand and smile!), and he traveled with me everywhere for the last seven years of his life. He had a great sense of humor doing things such as stealing popsicles from me when my head was turned, and peeing on mean barking dogs behind fences no matter what their size.

He was an Airedale mix, a real cut up, and everybody's friend.

RIP Flip! 1960-1977
