Upside down flag, the 4th, and my 9 year old daughter
I've used the American flag, upside down in distress, as my avatar since joining DU. My 9 year old has often seen it, we've spoken about it, and she understands why I use it.

This evening, I found her taking apart the small flag she usually waves at the annual parade, and trying to re-staple it upside down onto it's slim wooden pole in preparation for going to the 4th of July parade in our town this year.

Needless to say, I helped her put it back together, with the flag upside down. And I plan on getting a larger one for myself to "modify" and wave at the parade this year along side her. My small statement of protest in a very red area.... Thank god my family co-opts a huge space along the parade route, with a lot of us sitting together, so we'll be buffered from crazies who take offense at our small protest.

We're having the picnic, the fireworks, the family gathering... and we're waving our distress signal. Since we get a LOT of Repub politicians marching here, I'm sure to get it out there front and center.

I hope you're going to have a great 4th. Fill it with meaning and make sure your neighbors, family, fellow townspeople and others understand our country's true origins.

1. If I might suggest something:
Can you do something to let others know why you're flying the flag upside down? I'm sure lots of dim people might just think: "Hey, those durn people don't know which way that there flag is s'posed ta go!" Can you attach a banner or something with an anti-Bush slogan like: "Save our country from Bush & Co." or something like that?

2. Great suggestion. Since we occupy a pretty big piece of the curb
for the 4th, that shouldn't be too difficult although since it's my mother's house and she is a hard-core Repuke, it will take some maneuvering.

But I'm sure we can find a way

3. Be careful
You need to check the state law. I had a friend who did this and was charged with breaking the flag code. He ended up getting off but it was a lawyer and a few thousnad bucks later. I think each state has a different code on this.

Public Law 829 (77th Congress) Sec. 4(a)
