I'm getting seriously depressed.
I don't know what to do with it. I haven't been depressed for decades.

2. That would depend on my depression being irrational.
I'm not sure that's the case.

In any case, I've been to too many meetings where the mechanism of anti-depressants are discussed. I know some people like these things, but I don't think they're for me.

Maybe I'm just seeing too much.

6. Have you had an event thtat may have brought it on?
I fought the idea of meds after my mother died, but, after a year and I WAS GETTING WORSE...I decided to seek medical attention. Was on the meds for a short while, had some grief counseling, and was able to go off the meds after a few months. My doc calls it "cyclical depression."

3. As a man who just got out of a 9 month depression myself

Take my advice ..
Turn it into something positive!!
Instead of wallering in your pain over things you can't control ..Work on what you can control.
Join a gym Take a walk a class..Anything .
The more you sit and stew the worse you will get and feel.
You hold the key to your own happiness weather you know it or not

7. Some of it has to do with my children, I know.
Edited on Wed Jun-28-06 06:31 PM by NNadir
I love their innocence. I love that they are children.

But increasingly I am aware of all the fathers in the world who cannot protect their children. Why am I qualitatively different from a father somewhere who sees his kid blown to pieces at some check point, or in some minor battle? A father who sees his kid suffering as a refugee? Increasingly I doubt that I can do anything to make their world safe. I feel hopeless and helpless and incompetant to do anything about that.

Tonight I took a walk with them by the edge of the flooded Delaware River, where pieces of the world are floating away, out of control, and I realized there is very little I can do.

I had such peace as a child; I lived in a time of hope; a time of belief in the future.

But really, when I look at my children, I wonder if they will live through some kind of Dafur. I'm just really getting a sense of how bad things really are.

8. Understandable. How old are they?
I feel for you. I'd have many of these same thoughts were I a dad in these times.

5. It depends what you mean by "seriously".
If you mean that you cry all the time, or don't want to do things you normally enjoy, or wish you were gone from this earth, then you need to go see your doctor. If what you're feeling is vague dissatisfaction and boredom, then go out and do something you've always wanted to but have not.

Wherever you fall on the depression scale, don't let it get the best of you, okay?

13. I did feel better when I exercised more.
We're working very hard now, my wife and I, and don't have much time, though.

I'll try to do that though. It's a good suggestion.
