My Ophthalmologist Has A Framed Photo Of George Bush On His Office Wall...
... should I change doctors?

I never knew this before... and even though he's a fine doctor, and even though I'm happy with my ocular implant... it really BUGS me to know that he's SUCH a right-winger that he hangs a FUCKING photo of Bush in his office.

Would YOU change doctors? Or could you overlook it?

1. Well....
...the dentist I use used to play "Christian Rock" for her background music in the office. It was fairly loud, and the songs were very, very religious. There were clients who changed dentists because of it. (I was in the waiting room once, and there was a Jewish family there, and they weren't happy about having to listen to that. Oh, and there was also an avowed atheist in the waiting room---we talked to her about the music too. She said she was changing dentists because the atmosphere made her uncomfortable.)

If it makes you uncomfortable to be around your doctor because of the GWB picture, I would change doctors, but not before telling them why. :)

3. That's Exactly It...
... he's completely competent, but it makes me uncomfortable.

The only reason I spotted it was because the door to his private office was left open a bit... and there it was... in all it's smirking glory.

It's not as though he's intentionally subjecting the ENTIRE waiting room to overt demonstrations of his RW political beliefs, but now that I do know (even if I only found out by accident) I'm considering going elsewhere.

(I'd also change dentists if they played "Christian Rock" in the waiting room too. Ick! It's bad enough that the dentist I goes to has that ubiquitous hard-cover copy of "Children's Bible Stories" in the kids area of the waiting room.)

6. Good for you...
...I think you're on the right track!

BTW, when the dentist got word that she was losing clients because of the religious music, she changed over to NPR. :) I had considered not going to her because of the music, but thank goodness it changed. :)

2. Are you sure it's not some sort of eye test?
You keep throwing darts at it until you hit it. That's how he knows the adjustments on the "Better 1, Better 2" machine are correct.

Wait, that's an optometrist, isn't it? Oh well. I just wanted to mention the "Better 1, Better 2" machine. :)

16. If my dentist kept asking me "is it safe?"
I would get the hell out of his office and find myself a new dentist.

No clue as to what he was referring to ... watch "Marathon Man" starring Dustin Hoffman. You'll find out what "Is it safe?" means.

And the picture of him with Santorum ... just one more reason to dump him.

30. Technically
he's using your money to support Republicans. But then again, it's only $2250, it's not as bad as say, buying gas at a Mobile station.

I think I'd make a quasi-joking comment about how his nasty eye chart is drumming up business by making the patients even more blind...and then see what his response is. Any freaky BushCo rhetoric and I'd be out of there.

11. Only if you know you have another doc that's competent
I do let my politics guide my purchase decisions, but not exclusively. I changed barbers because my last one had Rush playing last time I was waiting for a hair cut (and my son was with me and the crap coming out of Rush's mouth was completely inappropriate for children)

But that's just risking a bad haircut. A doctor is another matter. If this doc is good you might want to stick with him.

Come on - be smart. If the guy is a republican that's one thing, but to hang a picture that will probably offend 70% of the population - time to find a new doctor.

BTW, my GYN knows that I'm a member of planned parenthood and a major supporter of choice. If I found that she wasn't - I'd get a new doctor in a heartbeat. (btw, she's choice too although her attitude is "It's none of my business")

If he doesn't force you to listen to him cheerlead for W, I'd say don't change. I don't expect everyone to see things my way and as long as he is professional (no proselytizing) I'd be inclined to let it go.

I would suspect that many specialists are Republicans, and among them there are those who would rather support the W is for Wrong administration than admit that that gang are even shitty Republicans.

I changed realtors because of his affiliation with the local Republican Party big-whigs here, and I've actually stopped going to a local golf driving range because the last time I was there they all were telling each other to be sure and watch the "Fox News" report on global warming.

It was going to be, they said, the "truth" about all this silliness - then they proceeded to start mocking Gore.

I will not spend ONE DIME at any establishment that I know believes the bullshit.

Any doctor that would hang a picture of any president on their wall apparently doesn't care about the feelings of his/her patients. If it were Clinton or Gore, it would be okay but what about his republican patients? S/he would want their business too.

If you wouldn't be bothered, that's great. Arwalden might decide it's a bit too much.

I'm not sure I'd have another choice in this county. The ear, nose and throat guy is a fundy who believes in creationism. That makes me uncomfortable with his ability to reason. I've been shafted by a lot of fundies in professional positions, but there are so many here I don't have much of a choice, dammit. :( God, a bunch of scenes just flashed before my eyes...this town is INFESTED.

37. The inpatient psychiatrist in this county is a fundamentalist.
I don't like to talk about this too much, but yes, I've been an inpatient. When I opened up and told the inpatient psychiatrist some of what was bothering me--a lot of it was feeling rejected because of my atheism and the county's plethora of fundamentalists--she told me that the depression was my fault for feeling "bitter." I knew immediately she was one of THEM.

If something bad happens to me, I don't have a choice which psychiatrist I see. If I end up in the hospital, I see the fundy. She's actively letting her opinions get in the way of treating patients. A psychologist I was seeing asked me some leading questions about her which made me realize he knows what she's been doing. I told him I knew she was a fundy just by how she treated me. (I've found out from others that this is, indeed, the case.)

Odd thing is, I went to her husband, an orthopedic surgeon, for my herniated discs and he scheduled me for surgery without consulting me first. :wtf: I heard all kinds of bad things about his "butchery" and decided to go out of town (Davis) for the (eventual) surgery. However, if I end up so bad I need to be in a psychiatric hospital, no matter where I am, they'll ship me back here. That's what has happened before and I don't know if there's a way around it.

Dammit, I hope I never spiral that out of control again because the inpatient facility here is a fucking nightmare even without the fundy psychiatrist.

38. If it makes you that uncomfortable, yes.
My dad's an ophthalmologist (good job on spelling that, btw) and he would NEVER put up pictures of ANY political or even slightly controversial people on his wall. People like to have their eyes checked and operated on little enough anyway, and they might just decide to go to another doctor or even forego the procedure alttogether if something ticks them off in even a minor way.

Another question you should ask is if he's the best one in the area, just to cover yourself first.
