Doggy lovers I have a question
Edited on Wed Jun-14-06 07:03 AM by southernleftylady
I just adopted a 4 month old puppy from the humane society (they had a 1/2 off adoption day ... it was PACKED ) and she is so freaking adorable but i take her out so much that i am worried about ticks and fleas but i heard you cant put anything on dogs till they are at least 6 months old.. so what can i do till then?

she hates to be inside when everyone is outside so when we take her to my parents house and we go in the pool she is outside running thru all the bushes and flowers...
any ideas??
oh btw she is a beagle/ german shepard mix... don't even ask how that worked out lol

1. Ask your vet.
Revolution is a good brand, and I believe that it is considered safe for most puppies.

We've just filled our yard with nematodes (flea and tick predators).

2. You probably ought to try an herbal flea collar.
It won't harm the dog and smells minty! :) I don't use harsh chemicals with my dogs, and they don't have any tick or flea problems. At four months old, your doggie should be OK with an herbal collar. (Besides, some of the herbal collars come in cool colors and some look like bandanas! :) )

Congrats on adopting a great little puppy! All of our dogs have been shelter dogs. They're the best! :D

6. You can absolutely put frontline on her, no problem. I even put it on my
2 lb pup when she was 8 weeks old, scratch that, I didn't do it, the VET did it. Not much, just for the right weight.

You'll be taking her to the vet for a check up, etc, yes? Sooner than later. Kennel cough and other kennel related ailments can surface pretty quickly. Keep an eye out for crunchy things on the edges of the ears. It's a type of mange that's costly to get rid of.

ENJOY!!!!!!

7. Yes, you can use Advantage or Frontline
or Advantix on puppies as long as they weigh more than 2 lbs. Get some and get it on her now.

And don't forget the heartworm preventative after your vet does the screening.

8. garlic!

Garlic has been working for me for 6 years now......2 cats, 2 large dogs = Zero fleas, zero ticks.

I also use an herbal spray on them called Salvarome....herb essences to keep the skeeters away.
