I just watched an amazing episode of All in the Family...
I guess you could say that it is a bit of a redundant statement but it was the episode where Mike's friend (the draft dodger) and Archie's friend (lost a son in Vietnam) were both invited to Christmas dinner. The last act of this particular episode is some of the best writing in all of TV...just some powerful stuff. I really believe that AITF is probably the best television show ever made. It's simply amazing how a show can be so poignant one minute and laugh out loud funny the next.

Right now the episode where Edith fends off the rapist is on now, another amazing episode. I guess TV Land is running a mini-marathon of this show all night

1. They must be in season 7 at that point...
the only "good" episodes after season 5 are the sweeps week ones; such as the Xmas episode and Edith's attempted rape.

2. The draft dodger episode is one of my favorites.
I haven't seen it in awhile, but didn't Archie get all bent out of shape but the father welcomed the draft dodger??

That is an amazing show.

3. Yep.
Archie lets the guy have it but his buddy comes to his defense, saying that if his son had done the same thing, he'd still have him.

It's a terrific, powerful episode. One among many in a show that's still hilarious today.

5. not quite
What he said was that his son was against the war, but he did what he thought he had to do. And that Mike's friend did what he thought he had to do. And if his son were alive, he'd want to shake Mike's friend's hand and sit down to Christmas dinner with him. Then he extends his own hand which the young man takes.

8. I saw that show ...
>>>Archie lets the guy have it but his buddy comes to his defense, saying that if his son had done the same thing, he'd still have him.<<<

Yeah, I guess from the father's point of view, it's easier to forgive or to let it go than to condemn. Many of us are guilty of self-righteous indignation at times (like Arch, here).

It was a good show. I was a pre-teen when it was on the air. It's not until after I watch the reruns on "TV Land" that I can appreciate the show for what it was.

6. still relevant and timely.
I remember one about Archie's friend Steve, a burly, muscular he-man who turned out to be gay.

One of the best written shows ever.

7. That actor (David Dukes), said that was a tough role for him.
The ovation from the audience when she threw that burning cake in his face was huge.

9. I liked the one about Edith's friend Beverly
The drag queen. There were a couple of funny episodes with her (I think?) and then the one where Beverly gets attacked by gay bashers and dies  Edith's response was so touching and moving. "She was my FRIEND! And now she's gone!"
