Tabby Cat Chases Bear Up Tree, Twice
Edited on Sat Jun-10-06 02:25 PM by gatorboy

WEST MILFORD, N.J. (June 10) - A black bear picked the wrong yard for a jaunt, running into a territorial tabby who ran the furry beast up a tree - twice.

Jack, a 15-pound orange and white cat, keeps a close vigil on his property, often chasing small animals, but his owners and neighbors say his latest escapade was surprising.

<snip>

Neighbor Suzanne Giovanetti first spotted Jack's accomplishment after her husband saw a bear climb a tree on the edge of their northern New Jersey property on Sunday. Giovanetti thought Jack was simply looking up at the bear, but soon realized the much larger animal was afraid of the hissing cat.

After about 15 minutes, the bear descended and tried to run away, but Jack chased it up another tree.

EDIT: Found a much better pic

46. My cat Chucky is 14-15 pounds of solid muscle, I bet he could do that too.
He's a neighborhood Tom-Cat that I adopted a few years after I moved into my house. He was living here before I was. I adopted him after he was injured in a fight with an even bigger cat. The neighbors cat had to have been at least 17 pounds.

Chucky scares the hell out of my other cats when he starts to howl at any yard intruders, but he's a absolute sweet-heart at all other times.

40. My cat Midnight weighs 8lbs and only has one fang.
She's "red file" at the vet's which means she's a dangerous animal. That happened after a hiliarious physics-defying incident where she managed to get around the vet, as he lifted her out of the carrier, latch onto his ass, going for a ride as he hopped and ran around the room yelling.

She used to beat the crap out of our 95lb German Shepherd who was not a nice dog herself (only trustworthy with family). When we have my stepbrother for the weekend, we also get custody of the dog...a big retarded black lab. Midnight has trapped this dog in a closet numerous times and refused to let her out.

Currently, I'm fostering a pit bull. Midnight saw him, sat down, waited for him to approach, clawed his nose, and sat back down to continue the staring down. The pit's reaction was to yelp and run away. He refuses to go near any of our cats now.

I wouldn't be surprised if she treed a bear one day.

BTW, this story happened in the town immediately north of me. Bears are common around here.

I have 3 male red (orange) and white tabbies and one is a scrapper-he's got 2 hunks of fur missing right now to prove it (it's slowly growing back) but the real fighter is the black/orange tabby female who weights maybe 6 or 7 pounds-she's the one who really rules the cathouse! :D

31. There are people who use trained dogs to harass bears
into leaving areas where they have too much interaction with people. They might have a place on the squad for that cat!

While it's a great story, I fear for the cat. Someday he'll meet up with a more seasoned bear... one who is too big to climb trees.

They are nimble, fast, and can outrun and outthink a bear in a heartbeat.

The very thought of a bear catching a cat is...well, very funny.

38. Have raised them for decades
Do you have much bear experience? They are faster, more nimble and a whole lot brighter than most people think.

The reason young bears climb trees is because older bears often kill cubs. Bears fight bears. An exchange with a fierce cat is not gonna be nearly as damaging to an experienced bear as the natural match-ups in their lives.

Oh, and I know some people who have lost cats... to bears. Not so funny.

54. I hate bears. Am terrified of them. I hear that their sight is poor.
Perhaps why it let a cat tree him?

I had a kitten who treed a racoon. The racoon stopped at three feet up the tree.. looked back down... and said "shit! its only kitten"..then backed down the tree. Kitten was thrilled at having treed the racoon..but didn't quite know what to do when the racoon "made him".

57. Black bears aren't scary.
I once ended up about 15' away from one. It just looked at me and walked away. I've been outdoors with them probably half a dozen times. They always either leave or keep doing what they're doing. They're not aggressive like grizzley bears. If you see a black bear, you're supposed to just yell at it and wave your arms a bit. They get scared and run away.

I doubt I'll be the fourth. I know not to get between mother & cub and since I'm not scared of them, I'm less likely to be attacked than you. You need to pretend you're the scary bear. If you act dominant, the bear becomes far less likely to act aggressive. If I was going to be hiking in grizzly country, I'd be carrying a gun though.
