I've lived all over and really don't have a "home". My parents live in a state I've never lived in and none of the furniture or other "stuff" that is in their home now was in our home when I was growing up. I feel like a man without a country. I've lived in Ohio longer than anywhere, so I guess it's home by default.

I guess what I like best about Wisconsin is that I know what to expect from people. New Jersey was too fast-paced and mean for me; California was way too laid-back; and North Carolina had too many people mis-using religion for their own purposes. Around here, it's pretty much a "live and let live" kind of place.

48. My children lived with their father in Ludlow, Vermont, near Rutland.
That was during their teenage years. They are now in their thirties, each with two children.

I think the state is really beautiful. I love the snow, but my current husband hates cold weather. My ex-husband still lives near Lake Champlain, in South Hero, VT.

Unfortunately, he is struggling with lung and bladder cancer, and may succumb to them this year. I only wish him the best as he and his family struggle with this difficult care.

Here's a photo of my daughter who lives here in Oregon, and my ex-husband, her father, taken this spring near Lake Champlain.

32. Four: NY, CA, AR, NJ.
When I was living in Arkansas, a young Governor, Bill Clinton, was defeated by the Republican. That's all I'll say about my brief time there.

I was born and raised in New York.

I did about a decade in California, on and off, with New York in the off periods.

I'm 13 years in New Jersey. Today I consider myself a New Jersey fascist. I can't understand why anyone would live anywhere else.

62. Maybe it's better for us if you stick with your original impression.
It doesn't really bother all of us that New Jersey is the butt of so many jokes.

The fact is, the more that people know about New Jersey, the more that will want to move here. It's probably better for us in terms of overcrowding, and yes, we are the most densely populated state, that our better parts remain a secret.

Seriously, you're welcome to visit. Just don't say too many nice things too widely. It's probably better if you just think of us as a giant stretch of turnpike refineries.

69. What kind of plant?
That area, the megalopolis including Totawa is the area that most people think about when they think "New Jersey."

I grew up on Long Island. New Jersey was close to me, but I never went there unless I was trying to drive somewhere. My experience was thus largely limited to the Turnpike, and I always tried to the maximum extent, to get through it at night.

When my wife agreed to live in New Jersey - we were leaving San Diego - she cried. I think that now she'd cry if we went back to San Diego. In fact, I know she would cry.

It was a tragic day. We wept all day, as I'm sure you did too.

What is more tragic, of course, is the further tragedy so blatantly excused in the name of that tragedy.

I would understand it totally if the negative associations of what you saw then forever stained your vision of New Jersey.

All that aside, this is a beautiful place.

Edited on Fri Jun-09-06 09:43 PM by Radio_Lady
I guess my maternal grandmother lived in Squirrel Hill, a suburb of Pittsburgh along with other members of the family.

I still have two male cousins (brothers) in Philadelphia, PA (they both moved there fairly recently from Pittsburgh).

Another cousin is in Haworth, NJ (just saw her on our NYC trip).

We contacted still another cousin who is now living in South Carolina. He's a retired doctor, who just turned 73 on 06/05/06.

These are the last members of our family. We were three only children and just one aunt who did have two boys. Five of us on that side of the family.

67. The U-Haul comment? It cracked me up!
Are you familiar with this song?

"Joey, Joey, Joey" was written by Frank Loesser for his musical, "The Most Happy Fella." You've probably never heard of that play, but it contains another fairly famous song he wrote called "Standing on the Corner (Watching all the Girls Go By)". It opened on Broadway in 1956. I first heard pure stereo in 1966. ... Music won't ever get any better than this.

Like a perfumed woman,
The wind blows in the bunkhouse.
Like a perfumed woman
Smellin' of where she's been.

Like Oregon cherries
Or maybe Texas avocados,
Arizona desert
Or Oregon pine.
She blows in and she sings to me
'Cuz I'm one of her own.
She sings:

Joey, Joey, Joey.
Joey, Joey, Joe.
You've been too long
In one town.
Now it's time to go, Time to go-o-o-o-o-o.
Joey, Joey, Joey.
Joey, travel on.

You've been too long
In one little town.
Now the harvest time's come and gone.
That's what the wind sings to me.

When the bunk I've been bunkin' in
Gets to feelin' too soft and cozy.
When the grub they've been givin' me
Gets to tastin' too good.
When I've seen all I want
Of the ladies in the neighborhood,
Then she sings to me.

Joey, Joey, Joey.
Joey, Joey, Joe.
You've been too long
In the same place.
Now it's time to go, time to go.
Joey, time to go.

70. Never heard of it but LOVE it. I will forward that on to my movin' clan...
Have you heard of "Wanderin' Star" from the musical "Paint Your Wagon" (the only movie you'll see Clint Eastwood break into tune!)? That has ALWAYS been my theme song!

I was born under a wanderin' star.
I was born under a wanderin' star.

Wheels are made for rollin', mules are made to pack.
I've never seen a site that didn't look better lookin' back.

I was born under a wanderin' star.

Mud can make you prisoner and the plains can bake you dry.
Snow can burn your eyes but only people make you cry.
Home is made for comin' from, for dreams of goin' to.
Which with any luck will never come true.

I was born under a wanderin' star.
I was born under a wanderin' star.

Do I know where hell is, hell is in hell-o.
Heaven is good-bye forever it's time for me to go.

I was born under a wanderin' star, a wanderin', wanderin' star.

Mud can make you prisoner and the plains can bake you dry.
Snow can burn your eyes but only people make you cry.
Home is made for comin' from, for dreams of goin' to.
Which with any luck will never come true.

I was born under a wanderin' star.
I was born under a wanderin' star.

When I get to heaven tie me to a tree.
Or I'll begin to roam and soon you'll know where I will be.

I was born under a wanderin' star.
A wanderin', wanderin' star

I guess I'd only count Utah as a half, as my dad moved there while I was in high school, and though I spent part of a summer and a few other vacations there, I never considered that state "home" to the same degree as other states where he lived ...

92. I was a military brat, so I never really had a real home
but I've lived in Oklahoma, California, North Dakota, South Carolina, Hawaii, Virginia, Texas and Florida. Oklahoma is where my family is from, and I have a fondness for the state in spite of the politics. Hawaii will always be special to me, because I lived there from when I was 16 to 20 years old. A great time to live there! But I know that if I went back, it wouldn't be the same becauseI am no longer a cute slim teenager.
I've lived in the United Arab Emirates for three years now, and honestly it's gotten to feel as much like home as any other place.
