The infarction resulted in significant tissue death. Rather than have the leg amputated, House had the dead tissue removed. This is what is keepin him in pain, IIRC. For more details, Pick up season one on DVD and watch the episode "Three Stories"

5. I just learned that last night after I picked up the DVD. Sorry I didn't
get into that show sooner, but at least I have something to keep me busy in the TV offseason now. I'm almost embarrassed to say how long it took me to get into West Wing, let's just say I'm working on Season 4 of that.
