Canadians make it to the finals (Scripps Spelling Bee)

One Canadian girl is still in the running to win the 79th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee after advancing to the championship rounds on Thursday.

Finola Hackett of Edmonton, who had the highest standing among the Canadian competitors last year, was still in contention Thursday after correctly spelling "cachinnate," "kaddish" and "bdelloid."

The championship round for the queen of all bees is scheduled for Thursday evening and will be broadcast live on television.

24. Oooh!!
So close...2nd. What a performance, though! :bounce:

I don't give a hoot about the Oilers and the Stanley Cup, but I can rally for a smart young woman.

7. I have enjoyed watching this since my daughter participated in the Nationa
Bee in 2002...speller 107 for those of you who haven't heard me gush about this before. :D It is a bit of a starstruck, surreal week. As a mom, it is one of my sweetest moment of pride. :)

8. My school didn't participate in the state bee
so I never had the chance. Once, long ago, I was a decent speller. I notice it still whenever they say the words and I catch myself sounding them out, figuring out the origin.

That must have been an exciting time for you! I don't know if I could handle it as a mother.

9. My daughter is an amazing speller...and I thought I was good at it.
When she won the regional bee...it was a totally surreal moment. The cameras...reporters...newspaper (Scripps of course) coverage... The trip... The Hyatt is beautiful, and all of the wonderful people we met.

11. It had to have been an incredible moment.
I can't even imagine it.

Interesting little factoid that they just announced: no one from Canada or New Jersey has ever won the spelling bee.

12. I just saw that...but, for perspective...when my daughter was in the bee
there were only 250 spellers representing, now there are 275... It keeps getting bigger as interest grows. :)

14. I think it's wonderful that interest has grown.
When I was in school you were instantly ostracized for not trying to purposely lose in the first round.

And the Jersey girl just won it.

15. Me too! My daughter has always been proud of her bookishness.
It hasn't seemed to affect her socially. her entire school was so excited. She's the only student from that school to ever place in the top 50 in the regional, let alone win...Ahhhh...I got teary eyed watching that. I am such a goof. :)

18. Stay away.
You'll just get depressed.

They said that stats show that foster children are 50% more likely to have PTSD than war vets.

I don't even know where to begin.

20. They are talking about a program in Louisville that
sounds promising. The whole idea is to really get the parents help instead of completely erasing them from their lives.

Seriously?

I'm taking a small break from sad news. I have to do that every now and then to keep my sanity. I knew I wouldn't be able to watch the foster care show. Jeez. 50% more likely? damn.
