Why is it so freaking hard to find a nice dress?
I need one for my brothers wedding, and I can't find one. I've looked at all the stores near me, and online. Nothing.

All I want is a nice knee length dress that's a color, not black or white, that's young, but isn't totally slutty. And! I would like to pay less than 150 dollars for it.

I guess I'm just asking too much. :eyes:

1. Check out the 2nd hand stores
Not to be cheap mind you but sometimes you can find a very good deal, even something new that might be available. I take it you live in a crummy town with not many choices. Most all the dresses in the stores in my town are very ugly with silly lace and giant flowers. I wouldn't be buried in it for sure. I'd get to heaven and St. Peter wouldn't let me in because I'd fail the fasion test.

Other than that, find a pattern and make it yourself.

4. I've looked in a few 2nd hand stores.
I've come to conclusion that I'll do a little traveling to the next(nicer and bigger) town.

Since I don't know how to sew, I'm thinking my dress wouldn't come out quite right. :7

2. I hear ya!
I haven't found a dress I really like in 2 yrs.
Do you have a Dress Barn store near you? I've sometimes found stuff there that is a little more on the modest side. I think they are online too.

Couldn't find anything. Everything is either black, or black and white. I can not wear black. Must have color. x(

3. For the same reason I couldn't find a pair of strappy sandals
a couple of years ago when chunky heels were in fashion. Marketers are trying to force-feed you whatever they say is in "fashion." You might try separates or a suit instead of a one-piece dress, if you can actually find something decent.

Good luck. :)

29. I've gotten the last few "occasion" dresses I've needed vintage.
Sparkly silver disco dress: $35 in Cleveland.
Purple slip dress: $15 in Milwaukee.
Blue beaded sleeveless wool sheath: $35 in Milwaukee.

I'm 5'2", 125# (+/-), hourglass...I seem to be shaped more appropriately for clothes from a few decades ago.

that's weird. Although they sometimes tend to have more pants and skirts.

those Macy ones that were posted earlier looked cool and colorful, though.

I once made the mistake of wearing a 3/4 sleeve rayon dress to a June wedding in Florida - what did I know, I live in Pa! ;)

Hope you find something nice.

Especially since it's going to be a small wedding and so there will be lots of pictures sent out to extended family and they'll be analyzing the pictures.

45. Go to Good Will
I bought a red Satin Dress for 6 bucks and stitched it to fit my body. Then I bought black satin over-the-elbow gloves for 7 bucks and did my hair and makeup for the Governor's Inaugural Ball. I got a ton of compliments and one indignant lady (whose husband's affections were not welcome) say "Well! You look nice, but SOME of us can't afford to buy such outfits for just one occasion!" Oh my!

I felt bad that her husband was so openly flirting with me. But implying I could afford luxuries? She obviously didn't know me well :-)

Seriously though, have a theme of how you wish to look in mind then do some shopping... Starting with Good Will. If you are not one who is inclined to sew, find someone who is. It's actually better (as long as it's someone good) then buying stuff off the rack. A good seamstress can taylor a garment to your body.

Best of Luck! :hi:

59. Sista' I hear ya!
I needed a dress for daughter's graduation. I am 48, but thanks to genes, don't look it. But either the dress were for someone 18 or for someone 88. I found my style on orvis, a fly fishing cataloger, but I ultimately bought a skirt from Old Navy and a sweater shirt from Target. Cost of outfit, $48. But I am going in this weekend to get some nice expensive jewelry at Filenes. One of those huge bangly wooden bead necklaces.

I found that if you get something really simple, you can add the wow with some really nice costume jewelry. Find the jewelry first and the go for the dress or outfit.
