Poll question: If Holidays are like Grief, what Stage have you reached?
Edited on Thu Dec-11-03 08:57 AM by unidentifiedbassplay
Last night I came to the realization that I react to the holidays much like a Grieving person.

Where are you today?

(on edit: C-word in Subject line replaced with something more inclusive. My typist will be boiled in egg nog and run through with a stake of holly.)

6. Not at all!
Virtually EVERYTHING about Xmas came from the Pagans. Tree, lights, yule log, gift giving, etc. Even the timing! (Winter solstice, anyone?) Christians had to co-opt it all in order to convert the heathens. Even Dec. 25th is a farce - it was previously celebrated as a Roman god's birthday, so again the Christians had to steal it in order to help convert everyone.

We celebrate Xmas wholeheartedly, because it's one of the earliest and most "human" celebrations: the understanding that the sun will come back, the days will get longer, and spring will come. Happy Solstice!

3. Depression here
I enter my dark stage usually about the time we have the company Christmas Party. It will go away this weekend after I bake the cookies and slide into a semi-comotose sugar high.

4. Very grudging acceptance.
The holidays make me feel lonely, so it's hard for me to get that excited about them. I do have some fun with my friends, but overall, there's more of a sense of obligation than joy.

9. ah, yes, obligation
Not to be sour, but learning to say "I am not responsible for what others expect" is a powerful tonic.

So is "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and, dog-gonnit, people like me!"

5. Denial.
I generally like the holidays, but will not be putting up a tree or lights for the first time this year. Besides, I'm enjoying eveyone else's Christmas displays and I'm tired of the dog knocking down the tree every other day. Being that I'm not a Christian, and that I'm kind of sad that we are still in Iraq and about the state of this country in general, and that I'd rather spend my money getting Bush out of office than on Christmas, what's the point? And finally, my daughter told me last year that she'd rather we give gifts to someone who needed stuff than exchange them amongst ourselves (we've decided on one thing we will justify buying--a digital camera), so we've sent off a couple packages to the troops.

10. I know what it is like Don
I am still here to listen and I hope that you have a good Christmas.

I have been 10 years without my Mom and I have made it this far.

She was all that I had and I loved her more then anyone will ever know.
