2. I have a Meade 3.5" "starter" scope with a free tripod.

It was a very good deal for a starter kit. It also came with a case and two lenses (9mm and 25mm) with an electronic handbox (no GPS though). A few hundred dollars.

33. See if there is a local club in your area

I've been a member of mine for the last ten years. They will be a great resource and might even have club owned scopes you can borrow. There is no perfect telescope. They all have advantages and disadvantages.
