Poll question: Favorite Hiaasen novel?
Edited on Wed May-17-06 12:56 PM by undisclosedlocation
I suspect that the correct answer is going to be "Whichever one I'm reading right now!" First five choices were from me, other three were nominations from the floor. Please vote Other by replying below.

I'm not even sure which way I'll vote. Usually I'd say "Native Tongue," which I've read three or four times already and gave three copies away last Christmas, but "Sick Puppy" is so sweet I'm starting to lean that way. Decisions, decisions.

See? I CAN read!

1. I think Lucky You is the most memorable
The White Clarion Aryans were so over the top I laughed until I cried.

6. The beating was just so savage that I can't fully embrace the book
but it's on the poll now. :hi:

Skinny Dip's on the poll now.

13. Read 'Hoot' before you see the movie.
It's enjoyable even on an adult level and takes no time to read. I thought it was as well plotted as any of his 'adult' books, just no swearing.

BTW: 'Flush' is nowhere near as good.

34. Definitely. It's too bad no one can make a decent movie
out of his stuff.

It ought to be easym, I would think, but

7. I'll agree with you, but I think this is sort of an unanswerable question.
Hell, Hiaasen has yet to write anything less than a great book. :-)

I put in the original post (unless there's two more nominees in a BF hurry.)

11. Truth be told, I thought he was in a slight decline with ...
...'Sick Puppy' and (especially) 'Basket Case'. Strong comeback with 'Skinny Dip' however. :bounce:

That being said, the weakest Hiaasen beats 90% of the rest of what's out there.

:hi:

The only Hiaasen book I've read is Skinny Dip, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm going to have to get into reading more Fiction - I'm more of a Non-Fiction person, to tell ya the truth.

Edit - crap, I knew I'd spell his name wrong.

You and Li'l Bunny would probably both enjoy 'Hoot' (see my post above.)

17. I don't think so, but meaning no disrespect to Carl, it IS pretty much
the same book over and over again. This can be said about most big-selling novelists of course. Carl at least always keeps it interesting, slips in a heavy with a weed whacker on his arm every now again, and was sending chapters of Skinny Dip to Zevon up to the very end. I think they're all good; hell, I liked the collaborations with Montalbano.

18. Basket Case
Gotta go with the rock'n'roll animal theme.

And yeah, I kind of agree that there's a suspicious similarity in his plots.

OTOH, anybody know if Skink is on DU?

21. Do you mean does the DUer Skink still post here?
Answer to that is yes, 6 times in the last 24 hours. There's also another skink with numbers filling out the username. And a HiaasenRocks, or something like that.

25. Not really
I wondered if Hiaasen's fictional crazed Florida ex-governor monkeywrencher was a DUer. I'd love to see his take on the issues of the day. I bet he'd be really well informed on kudzu.

24. LOL, I'm a slowpoke
Years ago, I heard Stormy Weather reviewed on NPR that included reading a long passage that had me in stitches. I read the book and became hooked on Hiaasen. Poor Edie and Snapper - LOL

28. Highly intellectual author
He writes about crazy people and crazy events in Florida. Lots of stupid dope heads, politicians, seedy characters etc.

Makes for fun summer reading.

30. I had to say "all of them"
I wouldn't want to pick just one because then I would think of something from one of the other ones and want to change my answer. I really would like ot find someone who writes like he does so we don't have to keep waiting for a new one from Hiaasen.

31. Every Last One of Them
The thing is, Hiaasen writes the same novel. Over and over again. Fortunately, it's a well-written, extremely entertaining novel. Over and over again. My wife and I happened on our first Hiaasen (I think it was "Sick Puppy") about a year ago, became instant addicts, and ended up reading all his books in the next couple of months. We eagerly await his newest one. Highly recommended...

I've had less success getting my girlfriend and other friends similarly obsessed, but maybe that's all for the better. Looks like there are enough of us jonesing for a Hiaasen fix already.:)

And will always be my favorite.

If I had to pick a second, I'd have to go for "Skinny Dip."

33. You forgot "Hoot," which I read even if it's a "young adult" title.
"H"sick Puppy" was my absolute favorite 'cause I'm a bit sick-humored myself.

Can't SOMEONE make a decent movie out of his stuff, dammit?

He's quite the cutie, too, IMHO:
