Got a favorite chair? Let's hear ya!

I'm sitting on a Girsberger Trilax; great chair that's worth what it costs, which is a lot. (List on the one I have is around $1200 without arms, which are a $175 upcharge. Street price is around $650-$900 depending on the upholstery.) I have some middle-back pain, and an hour or so in this chair straightens it right out. I tried the Herman Miller Aeron chair everyone raves about and didn't like it. Tried the Steelcase Leap and wasn't crazy about it either. Besides, both of those chairs look weird as hell.

purchased from Staples for about 60 bucks. Real crap.
I just turned it over to see if there's a brand to warn about, but no luck.
Just stay away from the black rolling swivel with arms in the shape of inverted triangles that costs about 60 bucks. ;)

Hell I put a pillow on the seat and it's alright. I use to have a leather office chair that cost a pretty penny but that's gone.

9. A pretty little white wooden chair

When I moved out on my own back in 1995 my parents let me steal it. But I had to repaint it and reupholster the seat. I painted it white and let me tell you getting inside all the little curliques carved into the wood was a pain in the ass. I covered the seat in a deep burgundy material with a layer of white eyelet embroidery over it so that the burgndy peeks through the little holes.

But I'm perched upon a cheapo chair I got at Office Depot about five years ago. Best twenty bucks I ever spent!

There's a new bathroom rug folded over the back. It may never see the bathroom. It offers just enough cushion and support for my wretched back that I might not give it up.

The whole ensemble was less than forty dollars and rivals chairs at three times the price.

Since I spend a good third of my life at my computer, this chair had better make me happy.

14. Old-fashioned barrister's chair

made of wood, kinda carmel colored. It matches my mission-style desk that I love so much. But this chair is not so comfortable. There is very little cushion. If I sit in it for any length of time, I find it hard to stand upright.

I'm going to have to forgo the matching chair infavor of a more ergonomic chair.

I have one of those barrister's chairs. Got it from the Property Disposal Office on Fort Campbell. I don't think I've ever sat in it--after all, it's solid oak with no padding--but it's just so classic looking.

The cats love it, though. And it holds four of them easily.

four-legged kind with wheels. Upholstered in a grey tweedy kind of fabric. Office Depot, $199.00. Quite comfy.

with genuine leather seat and minimal padding. I've been dreaming about one of those jobs with wheels, shock absorbers, padding, and arm rests. Electric bun warmer? Niagara Cyclo massage? Hmmmm, I can dream, can't I?

Here's where I compute and this is what my chair looks like:



After I read this book, The Chair: Rethinking Culture, Body, and Design, by Galen Cranz, I was never the same again. The book tells you that chairs have more to do with tradition than the human body. In fact, chairs are hazardous to one's health!



Once I knew that, all I wanted to know is what was best for my body, especially since I spend many hours online.

The answer is that a chair should put the human in a laid back "Z" position (thus the recliner that you see above and which you can also see from this photo):



Also, humans are not meant to sit in a position for any significant length of time. Having learned that, I mix up my computing time with all types of physical tasks, such as getting down on the floor and dusting under my bed and wardrobe or playing games with my cat. Then I might go back to the computer for a half hour but get up again and go out and shovel some snow or wash the car. The point is to do tasks that call for you to stretch into all types of positions because the average human's day only calls for the body to be in a couple of positions (mostly with the head and arms forward, looking down). Also, this method keeps one's metabolism up and consequently more calories are burned.

Another thing I learned from this book is that the chairs they are selling as "ergonomic" are just so much bunk. They sell them for a small fortune but the bottom line is that the best position is the laid-back "Z," which you cannot get from one of these expensive "office-type" chairs. Now my recliner did cost $7-800 but it is very comfortable and adds a nice touch to the decor of my home.

24. A Steelcase chair - Drive series.

Not a bad chair, but it is definitely NOT the HM Aeron chair that I set in at my previous job. That thing was just pure heaven.

The Leap chair? OK, but not as comfy as the Aeron.

Hmmmm. Never appreciated the "look" of Girsberger. A bit too 'function follows form' and 'look at me, I have a wonderful European design' for me. And also not as comfortable.

But that's just my $.02...

It sucks. I'd have to get a doctor's note for a good one. I could, in a heartbeat. But it's so gd much trouble. I had to wait two months for the ergo keyboard & track ball, even w/ doc's note. :eyes:
