Poll question: Have you ever used an..umm...."escort"?

In light of the Duke Cunningham scandal, I'm interested in seeing if any DUers have used such a service.

I don't use it, but I would legalize it to get it off the streets and raise property values. Plus, if Penn and Teller have taught me anything, it's that illegal stuff is dangerous often only because it's illegal.


I'm interested in hearing from anyone who wants to share: men, women, straight, gay, whatever. Feel free to vote anonymously if you want, but be honest.

Finally gave out at the parking lot at work. In a prime parking space, too! Managed to nark off a few people because it sat there for a week.

I had the pleasure of escorting one of only a handful of Black women on my campus. This was in the early 70's, South Texas, with a student population 90% Hispanic, 10% Anglo, and that's pretty much it. I was so proud she picked me, I was beside myself.

The former is never on the streets, and the higher up on the socioeconomic ladder one gets, the easier it is to hire a prostitute. Places with high property values have drugs and hookers too, but less hassle from law enforcement about it.

I've had friends who were sex workers, men, women, straight, gay, AND whatever, but never been a client.

I'm going to be in Amsterdam next month, and whoring in the Red Light District ISN'T the reason I'm going. But I do think legalisation is the way to go; it eliminates the organised crime element, ensures regular tests of prostitutes for STDs, and removes the burden of dealing with a victimless 'crime' from the court system. Legalisation of prostitution has been successful in those areas where it's been implemented (in the Netherlands, in Nevada, etc).

If you do your research and proceed intelligently, partaking in the escort scene is a hell of a lot safer (and more satisfying) than playing the dating game.

I expected a lot of people to support legalization, because as liberals we should support personal freedom between consenting adults.

The number who have used the services is mildly surprising. But I was really surprised to learn that some of our very own DUers have worked in the field. I'm sure you have some great stories to tell, but it may be inappropriate for this discussion board. I didn't think to include that option in the poll.

45. Yes and no, I dated an escort for a while.

In college, and it was an interesting relationship to say the least. She was a beautiful, intelligent, athletic woman and she "escorted" to pay her way through college. Before you say "Poor Girl" and heap pity on her, understand that she primarily escorted rich fatcats who wanted someone young and attractive on their arms for special functions or on vacations. She not only made enough to pay her way through Berkeley, but had a very nice apartment just off campus and had the cash to buy essentially anything she wanted. If that weren't enough, many of her "escorts" took her to Hawaii, the Bahama's, and other exotic places around the world. One of her "best" clients was a rich single New Yorker who wanted to take his yacht on a cruise around the Medditeranean and Black Sea, and wanted her along for company. She spent two months with him, his crew, and the best sights in southern Europe...and made $1,000 a day to boot. He eventually proposed to her, but she turned him down (she had this rule that she wouldn't ever develop any permanent relationships with her "clients").

She is a wonderful woman, but it just didn't work out between us. I was OK with the sex thing, but it eventually grated on me that I couldn't take my own girlfriend out half the time because she was off looking pretty on some (probably Republican) asshole's arm. You can only take sitting home alone on a weekend so many times before you start to look for someone else to spend that time with. Last I heard, she's still very liberal and is working as an attorney in San Francisco.

Here goes my whole of ever running for elected office....

18 years ago I was dating a woman who decided after 2 months of dating (and sleeping together) that she wanted to "wait until we were married." I was disappointed, but I thought I was in love and that that was a sacrifice I was supposed to make.

When I broke up with her 10 months later, I was a little "pent up." However, I'm a nice guy, and I didn't want to sleep with someone just ot sleep with them. I'm simply not that type of person. Casual sex sounds great on paper, but I didn't want to risk hurting someone emotionally who didn't deserve to be hurt. I thought a prostitute was the perfect answer; I would get what I needed and she would get paid.

So I went to the local brothel.

Funny thing was, I couldn't escape my "nice guy" curse even in there. My "escort" was very pretty, and seemed very smart, and while the "act" was pretty unfulfilling, I developed a crush. I started picturing myself as the "hero" who would "save" her.

So I went back a 2nd time, looking for her. She wasn't there, I picked someone else, and the experience was horrible.

So there you have it. I don't condemn women who make that choice, although I think it must be a dangerous and degrading line of work. And it's hard for me to judge men who choose to partake of their services.

And yes, I wore a condom each time.
