Gwyneth Paltrow named her son MOSES? Seriously, what do you think?
Edited on Tue Apr-11-06 09:48 PM by Radio_Lady

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph! I don't understand it. Do you?

"Apple and Moses are out to play. Hey, hey, hey, HEY!" said Gwyneth today.

All I could think of was the old refrain about "Moses supposes his 'toeses' are roses."

4. You know, even the name Adam breaks a famous alliteration rule.
Edited on Tue Apr-11-06 09:54 PM by Radio_Lady
Your child should NOT have a first name that has a final letter that is the SAME as the first letter of your FAMILY name. It's because of the auditory liaison between the two names, causing immense confusion.

So, AdaM Martin == say it to yourself a couple of times. It sounds like Adam _Artin. See what I mean?

I was married to a man named Peter whose second name began with an "R" -- people thought his name was something different every time. Eventually, he just used "Pete" because of the confusion, and still had to spell his second name.

Actually, I thought a nice combination would be PIER or PIERRE -- you know, APPLE and (PEAR)? Fruit salad tonight!

In fun,

Radio_Lady in Oregon

2. Her father was Jewish,
I'm not sure about her mom. Perhaps it was her grandfather's name.

I try not to be too judgemental about these things. If my mom & dad had decided to re-use family names, I could have ended up with Zora Wilhelmina. Seriously.

6. Well, my daughter named her son Solomon --
Edited on Tue Apr-11-06 10:00 PM by Radio_Lady
Her husband's beloved Jewish grandfather died during her pregnancy. His name was Solomon. (Traditional Jews re-use the name ONLY after death.)

So my five year old grandson is Solomon Zachary. It's a pretty old-fashioned name! But he's a very NEW FASHIONED kid! How about this little dude?

12. The only thing I don't like is the diminutive --
Nobody should be known as "SOLLY" -- sounds too much like Asian mispronunciation of "SORRY..." but that's just my opinion.

I wanted my daughter to name him Zachary Solomon, because I like Zack as a male name. Their last name is an old-fashioned Jewish name, too. Consequently, most of the people with his FULL COMMON NAME are on the Social Security Death Index. No kiddin' -- I checked!

26. Serry? Is that your given name? Never heard that one!
You must get a lot of confusion.

My stepdaughter is Cindy. NOT Cynthia -- but Cindy.

We all have pretty common names, Ellen, Allen (changed from Alvin), Michael, Karen, Cindy, Linda and David.

My son has two little boys. He is a Mormon, and he gave the children his name, David Scott, as two middle names.

Our grandkids are Nicholas David and Tyler Scott.

Good choices, IMHO.

46. Whoa. That's some serious name scrunching going on in your family.
Was your mother concerned that the two dead aunts would come back and haunt her if she had used the names in sequence? -- Jenny Sara (last name) or Sara Jenny (last name) both seem OK to me. (Kind of like THE DREAM of Fruma Sarah in "Fiddler on the Roof"?)

I kind of like the name "Senna" -- although it's a color name, it's also the main ingredient in laxatives.

My whole family is Jewish by birth, so I understand the traditions. However, the five kids are all over the lot from my daughter who is almost Orthodox -- to my son, who has been baptized a Mormon.

My husband had a bit of a fit when his son Michael S. named our grandson Michael A.A. -- but we've gotten used to it. "Big" Michael married a lapsed Italian Catholic gal so he wanted the name kept up, I guess. They never had another child. "Little" Michael is now 17 years old and I think he must be taller than his father -- we'll see when we visit next year.

64. Serry, when I named my daughter, I wanted her NOT to have to spell it.
Edited on Thu Apr-13-06 02:14 PM by Radio_Lady
I had pretty much settled on Linda (Spanish word for "BEAUTIFUL" and an old hit song from the 1940s, which I sang for her as a lullaby when she was a baby.) I decided on the regular spelling, as there were others who were spelling it LYNDA, after President Johnson's daughter LYNDA BIRD JOHNSON.

However, I've always like the name Dina, but pronunciation issues were complicated. Some people sounded it as DEE-nah, which I preferred, as in Dina Merrill (a well-known actress at the time); others said it like DIE-nah -- a Southern pronunciation which was not to my liking. Obviously, I didn't want to add the final "H" as in Dinah Shore or Dinah Washington, two deceased singers.

Eventually, I named her Linda Michelle (She had a last name that she always had to spell.) The alternate was Dina Suzanne.
I think I made the right choice.

My son got David Scott. Alternate was Daniel Kenneth (which I still like). David was about the sixth child in his kindergarten class with the same first name.

Eventually, I told them both, "If you don't like your name, just change it." But that never happened. (My husband was named "ALVIN" and had a Russian last name, which he wanted to Americanize. Eventually, we all changed the last name, and at the same time, he took the name ALLEN. Simple procedure in Massachusetts court, as long as you're not trying to escape the law or evade your debts.)

In peace,

Radio_Lady

45. Hey Radio Lady! Let me tell you about Sol Feinstone...
I was a little girl when I met him, and he was in his late seventies-early eighties. He came to this country from Poland when he was a young man. He was penniless.
The coins tossed to him in steerage from the "upper" decks enabled him to land in NYC and buy some bread. He never forgot the kindness of the lady who gave him more than his penny's worth of bread when he was hungry. In the course of his life he amassed a fortune by working really , really hard and there was no greater American patriot than Sol Feinstone. He founded the David Library of the American Revolution in Bucks County, PA. My family went to visit him and his wife Rose on Fire Island when I was little. We walked to the bird sanctuary on the island and were halfway back when we bummed a ride from a cop in a dune buggy who was passing. We were all so tired. My parents at the time were in their late 40's/early fifties. Sol was in his late eighties and he walked to the sanctuary and back every morning. He really was a most impressive man. I'm not sure how he and my dad met, possibly through the newspaper where my dad worked at the time. But I will always remember him and as he is the one and only Sol I have ever known, the name sounds to me to be strong and capable. It's a really good name!

47. What a delightful story! It's interesting how a name can stay with you
and color all your memories for someone with that name some other time.

There is one fellow at CBS, a Jewish producer for "60 Minutes" whose name is listed as Solly Granatstein on the program. I assume his name is Solomon, and he is just using the familiar spelling, but who knows? I guess that's like Katherine Couric became "Katie" Couric.

Haven't seen ya around the DU, but it's easy to get lost in all the forums and the journals.

I went to see "The Wild" a new Disney movie with my grandson today.

I'll post a review on Friday. The colors were by Crayola, but the story was pure crapola, I'm sorry to say. Disney and Pixar's adventure "The Wild" is pretty tame, and lacking a backbone story.

The website for this movie boasts that "418 people (spent) 1.5 million work hours to complete 'The Wild'" -- this may go down as one of the biggest wastes of time in moviemaking history. It ain't no "Shrek."

20. this information on WHY she and husband Chris Martin chose the name...
from Entertainment Tonight website: link: http://et.tv.yahoo.com/newslink/14410/

Gwyneth's second child made his grand entrance at a New York-area hospital on Sunday, and the name Moses has a personal meaning to the happy parents.

Chris wrote the song titled "Moses" especially for Gwyneth and performed it with his Brit band COLDPLAY. The song also appears on the group's Live 2003 album.

And here are the lyrics to 'Moses' by Coldplay: link: http://www.lyrics007.com/Coldplay%20Lyrics/Moses%20Lyrics.html

Verse 1:
come on now, don't you want to see
this thing that's happening to me
like moses has power over sea
so you've got power over me

Verse 2:
come on now don't you want to know
you're a refuge, somewhere i can go
you're air that, air that i can breathe
you're my golden opportunity

Chorus:
and oh, oh yes i would
if i only could
and you know i would
and baby i, oh baby i
i wish

Verse 3:
come on now, don't you want to see
just what a difference you've made in me
i'll be waiting oh no matter what you say
cause i've been waiting for days and days and days

Chorus:
and oh, oh yes i would
if i only could
and you know i would
and baby i, oh baby i
i wish
i wish

Bridge:
oh, oh, oh
oh, oh, oh
if the sky's gonna fall down let it fall on me
if you're gonna break down you can break on me
if the sky's gonna fall down let it fall on me
if it's gonna rain down it can rain on me
it can rain on me

She named him after a song lyric.

Well, come to think of it, I named my daughter Linda MICHELLE after the song "Michelle" in the 1960s.

Still not convinced he won't get teased with what the reporter wrote in the first link:

It's a "playground unfriendly" name. I'm just thinking about the teasibility factor!

He referred to his own child, a sweet little toddler, as BEAST BABY. She was just learning to talk, too. I don't remember the dog's name.

48. No. We're just batting names around here, BigWillQ...
What are you up to today?

My big job of the day was washing and drying a queen-size comforter at a commercial laundry and talkin' to two other nice ladies.

It was just beautiful in Portland today. How is it wherever you are?

Warm regards,

Radio_Lady

Been like this all week. And we're done 2 men.

It was warm and sunny for most of the day here in CT then it got chilly. I can't wait for spring to really get here.

60. I love Connecticut. Used to work for a company with HQ in --
Stamford, Connecticut. Hubby and I once drove the Boston Post Road (Route 20 in Massachusetts) all the way through Connecticut. I've been to Darien (one of my managers used to live there), Greenwich (pretty and busy and expensive main street) and even out to the west for a couple of trade shows I had to cover.

Spring starts in Portland, Oregon in late February with forsythia out by first week in March. This year everything was earlier -- including the cherry trees. Now the tulips and daffodils are up.

Portland has milder winter weather and virtually no snow -- even thought it's at about the same latitude as the New England states. People think it rains all the time, but that is not true. After mid-June to early July and up to around October 15, there is ABSOLUTELY NO RAIN. We have to have a sprinkler system for our lawn and shrubs.

What you do lose is bright sunlight. For example, Boston has two sunny days out of every three; Portland has only one sunny day out of three.

I moved here on April 4, 1998 and just celebrated my eighth anniversary as an Oregonian! My husband got here earlier, October 12, 1997 to start a job. Although I was terribly homesick for the first six months (We were living in a one-bedroom apartment, and I had NO JOB and NO CAR for about a month, but was helpful to my daughter who had a newborn baby.) Now we're really settled and it feels good!

Photo of the ONLY SNOW DAY (March 9, 2006) we had in Portland in all of winter 2005-2006 -- about two inches that was completely melted the next day! The kids in the neighborhood had a ball -- no school! There were about 10 snowmen assembled in just 24 hours in our area.

Moses..Lourdes.... Many WAY more popular names come from the bible: Sarah, mary, Adam, Joseph to name a few.

I feel sory for kids of celebs, always liveing in the shadow of a famous parent.

41. Frank Zappa named his kids Dweezil & Moon Unit.
Frank is more important to me than Gwyneth--but why chastise her for picking a more "normal" name?

In fact, Moses is more common than Gwyneth.

Dreamcoat" in Portland.

Now, guys -- name all of the twelve sons of Jacob in the Bible:

Twelve Tribes

General Information

Jacob

In the Bible, Jacob was the grandson of Abraham and Sarah, the son of Isaac and Rebecca, and the traditional ancestor of all Israel. Jacob obtained his prominence in the line of Abraham by tricking his elder twin brother Esau out of both his birthright and his paternal blessing (Gen. 25:29-34; 27:1-41). As he fled from the enraged Esau, Jacob had a dream at Bethel of angels ascending and descending a ladder to heaven (Gen. 28:10-22). He married his cousins Rachel and Leah and worked 20 years for their father, Laban, in Haran. He later wrestled with an angel, who gave him the name Israel (Gen. 32:22-32), and was reconciled with Esau. Jacob's 12 sons were the ancestors of the 12 tribes of Israel; Jacob's favorite was Joseph.

From Andrew Lloyd Webber's lyrics, "Jacob & Sons"

NARRATOR:

Way way back many centuries ago, not long after the Bible began
Jacob lived in the land of Canaan, a fine example of a family man
Jacob, Jacob and sons, depended on farming to earn their keep
Jacob, Jacob and sons, spent all of their days in the fields with sheep

Jacob was the founder of a whole new nation,
Thanks to the number of children he'd had
He was also known as Israel but most of the time
His sons and his wives used to call him dad
Jacob, Jacob and sons, men of the soil, of the sheaf and crook
Jacob, Jacob and sons, a remarkable family in anyone's book

Reuben was the eldest of the children of Israel,
With Simeon and Levi the next in line
Napthali and Isaachar with Asher and Dan,
Zebulun and Gad took the total to nine
Jacob, Jacob and sons, Benjamin and Judah, which leaves only one
Jacob, Jacob and sons, Joseph -- Jacob's favorite son
Jacob, Jacob and sons

56. Biblical names are really neglected these days.
You have no Samsons or Nehemiahs or Elijahs anymore amongst the populace. But I did run across someone lately whose wife was Bathsheba!! Could that be?

And there's Elijah Wood, of course. :)

As for Moses...I didn't really see it as any different than Noah, another well-known Old Testament name.

79. Biblical names are very popular among my daughter's friends.
Some of them are quite unique. They are Noah, Eli, Simon, Benjamin, Isiah, Hannah, Sarah, and others I can't remember that are IMPOSSIBLY unique. One woman named her daughter after an Egyptian queen (not Cleopatra).

Shoshana is my granddaughter's middle name, but my daughter has a friend who was in her wedding who named her daughter Shoshana as a first name. They call her "Shoshie" and unfortunately her last name also has an "SH" sound in it, too. It's difficult to hear the two names together and not give a chuckle.

58. I'm more into New Testament names. Would rather had given them
trust funds, but I don't have the $.

My kids have NT names: Stephen (first Christian martyr) and Matthew. Heck, I like the names. So does my husband.

A good name is the best gift for a kid. So is a trust fund, if you can swing it, and we couldn't so we had to settle for good names.

80. Just to even things up, my Jewish sister-in-law named her sons
Scott and Matthew. The names go well with their Americanized Polish name.

Who can afford trust funds for their kids? Not in our middle-class family.

distressed if Gwyneth had named her first child Apple, her second child, Banana, and then told the world she was expecting a third child which she intended to name Canteloupe. Her reasoning? She was going to teach them their place in the alphabet by lining them up against a wall.

I'd think she was pretty FRUITY then...

Good night, and good luck,
