Another "Tide is Turning" Story
I was visiting some married friends of mine, and the wife of the couple (who's been my friend since grade 9) isn't very political. You might even go as far as saying she doesn't really pay attention at all. Well during the evening, conversation turned to a mutual friend of ours who was fixing a house for his cousin but abandoned the project since his cousin (who is in the reserves) was shipped to Kosovo with no idea of a return date due to all the wars Shrubbie is starting. Then came the amazing part: without any prompting my previously politically challenged friend just blurts out "I don't like our President, do you?" At that point my girlfriend (who agrees with me but is probably sick of my political rants) just looked at me like "Oh shit....here we go" but I left it go without much comment, simply content in the fact that Shrubbie is even pissing off people who normally wouldn't give the hindquarters of a rodent about world affairs.

1. I have one, too.
My niece had her second birthday the other day; she's the daughter of my neo-con fundy sister and brother-in-law (both of whom I love dearly despite our differences). One of the gifts she received was a talking doll named "Liberty Belle" that recites the Pledge of Allegiance when you hold her hand over her heart. I kid you not: this is a big seller in fundy circles.

In any case, we were all oohing and aahing over the gift (I participated for the benefit of my niece) when my brother-in-law chimed in with, "Well, have you seen the Tom Daschle doll? When you put his hand over his heart he says, 'Where are the WMDs?'"

Scattered chuckles around the table. As is my custom, I held my tongue. And then - here's the breakthrough - my brother-in-law's best friend, an old-school conservative Repub if ever I knew one, turned to him and said, "Bush has really struck out on finding those, hasn't he?"

Brother-in-law chuckled nervously, stammered, and quickly changed the subject. I was a little embarrassed for him, but mostly impressed that Dubya is starting to piss off his staunchest defenders.

Keep the faith, troopers. Change is coming.

2. ...
That reminds me of the way everyone looks at me when my teachers or friends bring up politics. They call me the "liberal attack dog" when I get going.

Anyway, the tide is turning a bit. Moderate America just needs to be turned away from Bush with basic arguments. "Look at the situation in Iraq." "Look how much of the tax cuts don't go to the middle class." etc.

3. That reminds me.....
Was at a "concert" for my other friend's wife, which was in the basement of the church her father is the Pastor of.

One wall of the church basement had the Pledge, only how can I put it...fundy-ized. Plegeing allegiance to the Bible and the Christian flag... :scared:

6. My three year old niece has a good line
If you ask her who's stupid, she'll tell you "President Bush". My sister and I are so proud of her.

4. It's not just the tide that's turning ...
it's a lot of American stomachs, turning at what they now have to come realize about Dubya.

5. even for some Mormons
I was looking at the U. S. Metric Association website yesterday and one of the links took me to this Mormon kid's website. And he says:

I'm religious, of course. I am very much an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I am generally conservative. I am an unwavering capitalist, and am in favor of fiscally responsible government and limited government involvement in the economy (though I am by no means a libertarian). I tend to vote Republican, but not exclusively—right now I disagree with a number of Bush's policies and actions, and I will probably vote against him next time if the Democrats can come up with someone half-way decent.

7. A simple...
"Just remember to vote against him next November" wouldn't be too bad. If the opening arises, point out that Congress will probably stay Republican, so putting a Democrat in will calm things down...

Of course, if the Rethuglicans continue on the way they have been, that'll probably change too - but let's not get carried away.
