Back in 1992, I purchased the Star Wars trilogy on VHS.
I just transferred them over to DVD - the color is a little faded, the sound is uneven, there are minor flaws in the film. So what? They're all letterboxed, and all prior to the "Special Editions." No restorations, no extras, just what we saw in the theaters. I'm so thrilled!

A Star Wars film fest is in my near-future. :)

2. Was it showing that badly?
;-)

And I don't normally get so worked up over such a thing.

Hey you...

4. I have that same set
no extra footage, no interviews, just the three films. But I still own a VHS player. And vinyl LPs.

But sadly I sold my 8-tracks and wax cylinders.

5. Many of my treasured VHS compilations of WWII B&W
from 80's PBS shows grew fungus and had to be thrown out. Apparently mold loves the adhesive on some older video tape. The other danger is the expected lifespan on them was only 20 years, then you'd get print through and possible tearing or jamming.

6. I remember them saying the same thing about CDs in the early 80s
I remember one friend in college (in the late 80s) who refused to buy CDs because they only had a shelf life of seven years. He was still buying LPs in 1991, the last I saw him.

7. And I keep my albums between 2 40 lb. weights to keep them flat
Magnetic media has horriffic shelf life. The early cd's had a problem with plastic coating (I had to replace my Stelly Dan Aja CD because of peeling). Not any more. When we finally use metal the media will be forever.

8. I just did the same with my THX Laserdiscs...
Some cleanup effects and the sound and video are much nicer. :)

I also had the VHS set similar to yours. I bought it for $80. Got $40 for it at the used video store. :D :D

9. I still have a VHS of the original versions.
I like the Yub nub song at the end of Return of the Jedi better than what they did on the new DVD. This way, I can watch it the old way, too.

:hi:

10. I just like it when Han Solo shot first and waxed Greedo.
Back then Han Solo was mad, bad and dangerous to know; a real outlaw. Then he got defanged. First by Leia, then by Lucas.

11. I'm nowhere near as enamored with Lucas/SW as I used to be.
First there was the little hissy fit Lucas had with the DVD standards committee. He tried to make THX part of the DVD standard so that he would get a piece of every DVD sold. The DVD committee said "no" to that idea, so in a hissy fit, Lucas refused to release his movies on DVD in those critical early years when DVD was trying to get off the ground. He deliberately tried to hurt the format, and all because they wouldn't give in to his extortion.

At the time, I was a big fan of the emerging format, and it was not a forgone conclusion that DVD would become successful, or go the way of Betamax. That little episode caused me to start seeing Lucas in a different light (before then I was a blindly worshipful fanboy).

I was an early adopter of DVDs, and in all the years I went without having Lucas movies, I discovered that I could live happily without them and spent my money on other people's movies instead. I went years without watching Star Wars of any kind. When Episode I came out, it stunk and I was disappointed. To console myself over the disappointment, I broke out my old Star Wars VHS tapes, and after years of not watching them, my tastes had changed. They didn't sweep me away like they used to, and all I could see was the bad dialog and the bad acting. Then the rest of the prequel trilogy came out and were even bigger disappointments than the first.

I was a pretty diehard Star Wars fan for the longest time, but to be honest, if I never saw another Star Wars movie again, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest.
