vapor trails, and engine exhaust is contrails. The only real difference being contrails form because of H2O that is in jet exhaust (as it's in ALL combustion exhaust)

If anybody's interested the generic combustion equation is:
nCxHx + nO2 -> nCO2 + nH2O

Either way, it's water vapor condensing out, whether it's hot exhaust slamming into cold ambient air, or water vapor condensing due to an extrme drop in local pressure (especially prominent over the wing surfaces when landing on a humid day)

Its disheartening to see here on DU such a bunch of ignorant people getting their rocks off making fun of something they don't understand.

When I was young, a rare white trail such as I see filling my skies here in L.A. would be pointed out by my father (a toxicologist),"they've fired another rocket from Vandenberg" (AFB). In case none of the jeering crowd here has bothered to look up for more than 30 seconds at a time, those white lines spread out, and get blown into the weird cloud shapes and oveall haze that whiten the skies in a way they DID NOT DO IN THE PAST.

When the short and ephemeral contrails we were used to seeing suddenly become long, persistent white lines appearing in grids, some people make up bizarre and kooky theories. That does not lessen the validity of asking "what the hell is going on up there?" "How is all this artificial cloud cover affecting the environment?"

There are some very plausible theories and intriguing information out there too, but I guess its more fun to throw eggs.

45. There are 2 interpretations of that post, idealista, here are the answers

1) The idea of the government spreading chemicals from the backs of planes is entirely implausible. I am serious, no it can't be done*. The people here are merely experiencing humour as the brain contemplates juxtaposing realities. It's a reflex, let them be**.

2) Global Dimming, however, is a muchm more real and dangerous problem. Our daily temperature ranges have been flattened by the artificial cloud cover. This is an empirically measured event***.
The fear is, if we stop using jets/aircraft (eg. from running out of petrol), our daily temperature ranges will spike, (well, return to the normal and higher value), damaging our ability to predict weather. It is uncertain whether it would have significant climatic impacts though.

The first star will only mean I will post many reasons why this is impossible/implausible.

46. global dimming - affecting crop yields?

"Cloud seeding", or whatever you call it when they cause rain or prevent rain, has been a common practice, as I understand it. Surely it involves spreading chemicals. Why do you suggest it is implausible/impossible?

About the "humor", I do not appreciate people using ridicule to abort discussion. I see parallels with adolescent bullies. If every topic not sanctioned by the (increasingly controlled) major media is a "conspiracy theory", then there will be less and less we can discuss.
