Student Hoping MTV Can Find Him A Girlfriend
<snip>

<snip>

Hilton Head High School junior James Burgess is an A-student. He drives a luxury car, knows how to fly a plane and wants to be a heart surgeon.

He's the kind of 16-year-old that parents probably would feel comfortable sending their teenage daughters to prom with.

The trouble is, Burgess doesn't have much confidence, and his preferred daily fashion of buttoned-down shirts, bow-ties and slacks doesn't exactly make him popular with the ladies -- and he's the first to admit it.

"I have problems talking to girls," he said. "I don't have a girlfriend, I don't have a prom date."

<snip>

On Tuesday, not unlike most days, Burgess wore a blue dress shirt with a pink bow-tie, black slacks, a blue sock on one foot and a pink sock on the other. Most of the teenage boys in his classes were dressed in blue jeans, polos or T-shirts with flip-flops or gym shoes.

"It separates me from the rest of the kids," Burgess said of his professional wardrobe. "I get more respect from adults."

The high school's hall monitor, John Smith, has known Burgess for a couple of years, and the 60-year-old says he's tried to offer the teenager tips on how to snag a date.

" 'You got a brand new car,' " Smith says he tells Burgess. " 'If you want to be a lady's man, get rid of this (tie) because ladies don't want to be with a guy who wears a tie all the time.' "

2. If he's aware that his "style" isn't popular with the girls he likes
Why doesn't he change it?

9. I dunno
From what I remember of being that age, anything shy of losing a finger or a toe would not have been too high a price to pay for some female companionship.

6. Guy worries too much.
He needs to just be what he is and not worry about it. I think there is usually somebody out there that will dig you regardless of how you look. By changing to be something you're not you might miss that opportunity to catch the eye of someone who thinks, and is attracted to the way you really are. I personally think fate is what it is. Trying too hard just leads to two people figuring out later that all was not what it seemed, and I'm sure that most people have figured out that the "I'll change them" attitude usually doesn't fit reality.

11. He has problems talking to girls
Well, what does he talk about, I wonder? His bow time collection? His luxury car, his ability to fly a plane, his desire to be a heart surgeon? How his "professional" wardrobe separates him from the rest of the kids?

Guy's probably a dead bore who's so into himself, no one wants to be anywhere near him. Or maybe not. But he should lose the dorky tie.
