What is wrong with Target?!
I go in with a return today. I'd bought an item which had been open and returned; not just the outside box w3as damaged, the inside condition clearly had shown it had been taken apart, assembled, put back poorly, then returned.

They said they only take back new, unused merchandise.

Tomorrow I'm going back to see if it's been put back on the shelf. Maybe Friday. If it's there, should I contact management?

Also, they gave me store credit, claiming my check hadn't been cashed yet. Guess what? It had. Two days ago. (don't forget, since 2002, or was it 2003, the way banks and companies do business greatly reduces the amount of time it takes for a check to go through the banking system - the "grace period" people used to enjoy is gone.)

1. Gave you store credit??
Were I you, I'd go back today and talk with the manager. I've never had Target give "store credit". A check is like cash, juat as using an ATM there. Only credit I've ever gotten at Target is to a credit back to my credit card for a returned purchase.

If you do go back and talk to the manager, go online to your account and print out your check and/or the statement showing it has been through your bank. Good thing to have on hand.

In store credit at Target just sounds way too weird...and wrong.

2. It's happened to me before, the store credit thing. Dunno why...
My record is good.

I also live in an area that no longer takes personal checks at all. (the "good" economy as libertarians and other fools keep thinking?)

But a LOT of their store policies have changed. Once you use an item, you cannot return it. (which explains why the cashier who sold it to me hadn't a qualm about selling merchandise I overtly said was used, yet the one doing the return huffed and puffed about policy...)

4. When's the last time you tried to return something?

What city/state are you in?

Were you well treated?

I saw the plaque above their customer service center and it does say "new, unused". Target's website states differently; "new condition".

So it ain't me.

8. About two months ago...
I returned something I had opened...they took it back...

I live in Northern Virginia, but grew up in Minnesota so have shopped at Target my whole life. Sounds like store managers have some leeway as to what they will accept.

11. For clothing and especially underwear, I'd agree... but this was a
kitchen util; a crock pot. I can half-agree with them, but if their stores and website and folks who sell the stuff can't remain consistent, the problem isn't me...

12. Oh yeah...
I didn't mean to imply it was...I guess it is possible Target is getting so big now that the Customer Service may be getting more bureaucratized. Hopefully you won't have any trouble with them in the future...for me they are a godsend after being forced into WalMart (Target just opened up out here about 6 years ago)

13. I doubt it...
I usually do my research beforehand, check quality beforehand, look at price, decide if it's worth it, and buy only what's needed.

Target used to be the BEST for returns and it seems they're reigning in on the stigma. Even I will admit they were a little too lenient before (by repute, not by me!), but now they're getting a bit much in the opposite direction.

6. are you pulling a Claude Allen?
;-)

Just kidding...

I have not had that kind of trouble with Target but I hate Burlington Coat Factory because of their idiotic return policy and will never shop there again.

7. Who? (and more on target's policies, boy do they really stink.)
I did read their returns policy webpage. Apart from the webpage saying "new condition" (and not "new, unused"), the way I was treated was in full accordance with their policies.

Oh, get this one: Refund value for each item returned will be reduced to reflect value of free gift or discount. So don't return anything that goes into the Clearance aisle; you'll wrongfully lose a chunk of money (legalized stealing, cool...)

9. I thought as long as you have a receipt you are kosher
that way even if the item goes on sale you can get what you paid for it???

Allen was that dude working for the Bushies that just got caught buying stuff at Target...then going back with just the receipt and then finding the same item in the store and returning it...that way he walked away without having to pay for anything....he gave up his job in the Bush admin...he was making (160K/year)....for only 5k in merchandise...

10. Here's what's said on the website...
http://www.target.com/gp/browse.html/ref=br_bx_0/602-4165125-3976668?%5Fencoding=UTF8&node=1068622

Allen is a sicko. For one thing, all those cameras would readily show who's doing what. For another, stealing like that is wrong. Even if the products are poorly made in China, and the same ones can often be seen in Walmart for 20% less on average... :eyes: (the table I bought at Target originally sold for $80, clearance for $40, got them to lower it a tad because of a lot of scratches - 10% is a pittance for a company that can't keep its own items in good shape... and it was made out of a bunch of parts from presumably the Chinese equivalent to Menards and would take anybody with the time about 2 hours to make... grand total cost being under $20... The nightstand they have, $40 clearance (regular $80) wouldn't be worth $10 at a garage sale either...)

Not that I'm going to walmart anytime soon, but I won't be going back to target for anything except food - the food staples I buy there are often rather cheaper than my main grocer chain's (by a factor of ~30%)!
