Poll question: DAMN YOUSE NETFLIX, DAMN YOUSE!!!
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 11:59 AM by Katherine Brengle
Don't know if I spelled "youse" right, but I cancelled my Netflix account and I am switching to Blockbuster Online.

I figure I have a better chance of getting good service from Blockbuster-- 1) Because there is a distribution center an hour or so from my house, and 2) The 3-at-a-time plan is the most expensive one they have (same price as Netflix) so even if they are bastards, it will favor me.

Just curious, how do you all get your movies?

1. worth noting that they share a facility
around me. my girlfriend uses netflix, I use blockbuster and we send our discs to the same zipcode in gaithersburg, MD. differnt box, same zip. obviously a subcontractor.

3. I have had Netflix for almost 2 years without a problem.
The only gripe I have is that sometimes I get discs that are unplayable. But Netflix sends me another one almost immediately.

5. Well, Netflix carries movies Blockbuster wouldn't dare touch.
So already they've got one up on Blockbuster. Yes, it's inconvenient and expensive to do business with them, but their selection is far superior. If I wanted to rent the lastest Hollywood turd, I'll go to Blockbuster. If I wanted to check out, oh say, "Tony Takitashi" or some other intelligently-crafted piece of cinema, I'll do Netflix.

15. I find Blockbuster very off-putting.
While I occasionally buy used stock from them (VHS tapes, DVDs), I don't rent from them anymore.

The attitude of the staff was what put me off, such as the young manager who told me people don't watch things with subtitles or in black and white. :eyes:

Then there's the time I asked for a tape of the HBO movie Truman, in which Gary Sinse plays give 'em hell Harry. Blank looks from the clerk.

And my personal favorite: going back to the store repeatedly in hopes of renting Kieslowski's Blue and finding it was out all the time. I thought my fellow renters had good taste, and then I realized it had been sitting on the wrong shelf in the wrong aisle for God knows how long. I guess no one ever straightened stock around there.

6. Well, Blockbuster doesn't get any of my money ever for any reason
Not a company deserving of my dollars.

Too red for my tastes: http://www.buyblue.org/node/369/view/summary

as compared to Netflix:

10. I'm glad I go to Hollywood Video then.
It looks like Hollywood Video makes zero political contributions, so they count as completely neutral.

11. While I do try to be conscientious about this stuff,
if my movies are never getting here, then there is no benefit to "buying blue" in this case.

12. Never getting here?
That seems to be the exception rather than the rule. Not that I don't sympathize with your problem, but saying "never" seems a bit of an overstatement to me.

If you wish to switch to Blockbuster, be my guest, but be prepared for worse service, along with the knowledge that you are giving money to a company that donates heavily to Republican causes.

13. It is taking...
an average of 10 days for the movies to arrive (this is not 10 days from the day I send them out, but 10 days from the day Netflix says they will be delivered).

That is unacceptable to me, it isn't worth it. Maybe BB will be better, and maybe not-if not, I will cancel that membership as well.

And as far as the political angle, I guess I'll just have to live with it.

Have you noticed any slowness with any other mail?

7. Well, I'm still annoyed by Blockbuster's 'no-late-fees' fee
that Netflicks could be run by a brazzillion Freepers I would still use them.

18. I suggest, based on reading the thread...that anyone who
has had difficulty getting movies quickly from Netflix, contact them by email or by phone, they will do something about it. I had a problem once and it was fixed in 24 hours.

Great company, excellent customer service.

19. Am canceling my netflix membership this week -
I was on the 3 at a time plan and had no problems for about 6 months - new movies would ship the same day they received the old ones - and there is a distribution center in my city so I could sometimes get movies in 24 hours, never more than 48 hours.

Some of the older, more offbeat movies would come from different distribution centers & take 4-6 days but I figured it was because they weren't high demand movies. Then I started noticing that movies would take 4-5 days to be credited as "returned" and most movies were coming from out of town. I downgraded my membership to 1 movie at a time and that's made it worse. It now takes at least a week to get anything - & I don't rent the latest releases either.

After over 3 months of steadily decreasing service, I'm giving up on them. There's a hollywood video near me that I guess I'll use if I really want to watch something.

When Netflix was good, it was very very good! It's a great concept...
