Need to buy used/old socks --- where?

Although I've been telling my Girl Scout parents to save their old, mis-matched socks for a community service project, they have not done so. Is there a place I can buy used socks?

1. That's a tough one

Not something I generally see in thrift stores. Do you have a local freecycle community? You might be able to find something through them.

3. Do the socks have to be old/used?

If not, I would contact some of the larger department stores. They may be glad to empty out some of their clearance rack for a worthy project, and they can take a tax write-off in doing so. They donate clearance stuff to our thrift stores all the time around here.

4. Try the thrift stores and garage sales.

Church rummage sales, too. This of course assumes that you have a couple of weeks to accumulate them. If you have laundromats in your area, you might ask what they do with lost items. Socks aren't as likely to be claimed as other items.

6. I've got a whole bag full of them that I don't know what to do with.

I can only use so many to polish shoes and use for houseclenaing puorposes. My county used to recycle fabrics but, alas, they no longer do. What are ya'll going to do with the socks?

8. We're making catnip toys for the Humane Society

Take an old sock (knot or mend it if needed), insert some poly-fill and fresh catnip & then tie it off. My Scouts are 5 and 6 years old. I had to come up with something pretty easy for them to be able to do the bulk of the work themselves.

7. Did you ask on Freecycle?

I just saw a post for old towels on my local Freecycle, so why not old socks?
