MUNICH gets a donut
Wow. One of Spielberg's best movies ever was left bleeding on the Oscar podium.

1. A replay of the "Color Purple" Massacre of 1986
I think he went 0-11 on that. This is a walk in the park comparatively

2. I don't get why this wasn't a bigger film. I didn't find out about Munich
until a few years back, and I was AMAZED that in all the years of Olympics news, no one EVER, EVER mentioned that an entire team was murdered, during the Olympics.

I couldn't believe it.

And then this movie, I thought would get people talking about it, and what happened after, etc.... and nothing.

It's weird.

7. Um...yeah. Gonna go way out on a limb here and say it's not bigger 'cause
Edited on Mon Mar-06-06 12:31 AM by BlueIris
of some of the same reasons information and discussion about the events it focused on aren't "bigger" topics of interest (and are actually still heavily suppressed culturally). I'm not going to name any specific reason for that suppression--there are many and I think those with stronger opinions about them at the moment (or any moment) should post about that because my head is...elsewhere tonight (I wouldn't want to mess up and offend someone for leaving anything out). However, I will post that I was thrilled when I found out a movie was being made about the Munich olympics tragedy, and even more excited when I found out it was Spielberg's project--and concerned because I knew it would face controversy and possible critical evisceration. I also wondered if ultimately the biggest problem it would face was being as ignored as the Munich incident and its historical and social aftermath continue to be. As irritated as I am that it was so snubbed tonight...I'm not surprised. I would venture that it's easier to get reliable information about Bush's unknown brother Marvin than it is to get information about Munich.

3. Well, I thought it was a good film up until the sex-murder montage
at the end. That was ill-advised, if you ask me.

Very disturbing film. As vicious as the Dutch hit-woman was, I still felt bad for her as she tried so pathetically to seduce her way out of getting killed. I understood when the guy said later: "I wish I had covered her up."

5. I think he was using sex as catharsis
In that context, it was an attempt to exorcise the demons that had invaded him, and his wife demonstrated incredible patience. In any other context, it might have looked like rape.

But yes, I'd have to say it was disturbing.

6. Agreed. It was brilliant work by Spielberg
I loved Brokeback, and Walk the Line, and Crash and Capote were also great films, but Munich struck me as just incredible filmmaking. Epic and brutal and powerful.

I think the competition this year was incredible. Some years I hated most of the movies, this year they were all great.

8. It was out at the same time as Syriana
Two serious movies at once doesn't bode well.
