My dad had Alzheimers and a living will for no feeding tube. When the swallow reflex was gone we sat with him for 11 days while he died. It was a sacred time. BUT we are a laughing family. Towards the end we were saying "look for the light, Daddy" and trying to help him let go. But the thing is, he was profoundly deaf and couldn't hear us. We had taken some computer-printed pix of all his family and rolled them up and tied them with a ribbon so that we could tell everyone they were with him when he passed on. It looked kind of like a diploma. Well, I have always been one for problem solving, so I took the tube and put it to his good ear and shouted "go towards the light, Daddy!" The poor man, his eyes shot open and it looked at the light above our heads and was so bewildered. But the worst casualties were my two sisters, who had dissolved into laughter at the whole scene.

Then, when my mom died a year later (almost to the day) she was in ICU and it was more sudden. I guess she had a stroke or something, but she was nonresponsive and the bells and whistles were going off as her vital signs plummeted. We hugged her and said our goodbyes and the nurse told us we could take all the gadgets off her, so we did. I took off the blood pressure cuff and let it fall on the floor. It was just one sister and myself, and we stayed there waiting for the rest of the family, about an hour. It was very quiet and we were reminiscing and praying and arranging her body, and the bp cuff on the floor, unbeknownst to us, blew up like a pufferfish and...popped with a very loud bang. It scared the hell out of us. We thought it had come from my mother. When we figured it out, we couldn't stop laughing and I think the ICU people thought we were very odd.

One last macabre story...years earlier, upon seeing my grandfather in his casket, my sister whispered: "He looked odd without his glasses. You know, he wouldn't be caught DEAD without his glasses." And THAT turned that event into a laughfest as well.
