HAPPY Birthday Miss Frodo!
:bounce: :bounce:   :toast: :hi: :loveya: :pals: :yourock: :donut:

Miss Frodo is Joani Alpern's beautiful and beloved parrot; she turns 5 years old today!! An honorary DUer with a low post count, she leads a very busy schedule. Sometimes she'll accompany Joani to sidewalk cafes.

SO: Let's teach her things to say to passers-by while Joani isn't looking. :P

2. She is such a regal-looking beauty!
Gorgeous!

I'm still thinking of the best possible things to teach her to say; I'm only on my second cup of coffee.:D

But may I just let you know that I am ALL ABOUT that popcorn-stealing smilie? :applause: :patriot:

3. She loved playing in the shower yesterday.

Sometimes when we travel together I have one of the universal rooms, then we can shower together.
She squeals, flaps a lot and gets totally drenched to the skin before she whispers you're okay.

5. Her vocabulary is growing.
She whispers you're okay more than anything. Next is want some, good, and um hum.
She sneezes and coughs to tease us into answering her.
I've seen her use tools to get what she wants. She is amazing!!!

16. She has me wrapped around her lil toe.
She is so curious about everything it's difficult to catch a picture of the blues and greens on her back.
This is a rare shot of her.

Blue & Gold Macaws like Miss Frodo need a large space to be healthy and happy.

I wonder why she imitates my cough.

12. She calls my name when I'm away from home.
At least that's what my house mate tells me.

Sometimes it's difficult to tell whether I'm home alone or not. The African Grey has a vocabulary of 547 words. I live with 4 parrots.

6. A very Happy Birthday, Miss Frodo!
:toast: How about some Swiss words? You know, the ones that almost sound arabic because of all the 'chschs.' Some of them really sound like you're trying to clean your throat.

I speak a bit of yiddish. Fortunately she hasn't picked-up on any of that!
The first time I tried to say Chai was hilarious.

8. Miss Frodo from Shtetl?
The 'ch'-sounds are genetic with us, I fear. Like the good ole 'Chuchichäschtli.' (Kitchen shelf.)

10. Perhaps she is. She is open-banded. The vet said it was a quarantine ban.
I thought she was born stateside now I'm not sure. I'm not at all happy about the very real fact that she may have been stolen from the wild.

About those 'ch'-sounds: after I migrated north I learned a whole new way of life. It seemed like I was destined to date and fall in love with Jewish men. I remembered some of the smaller special days more often than they did. When I was in school I wanted to learn the German language. I was studying psychology and thought it would be wonderful to read the original works instead of translations.

13. I'm sorry about the
quarantine ban. Happens a lot (how would you know?) and causes troubles, especially now regarding the bird flu. The laws are very strict here, and my brother in law has a curing station for wild birds of prey, and they're quite tough. But it's quite nice to see a falcon or eagle from close up, and we have a huge feather collection, including eagle feathers. :)

Let me guess, you mean Freud, Jung and the whole bunch? Freud is kind of okay to read, but if you go deeper into Jung, it get's quite though. His personal assistant and co-writer of his biography (next to other books: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=books&field-author-exact=Aniela%20Jaffe&rank=-relevance%2C%2Bavailability%2C-daterank/104-7195601-3087100 ) and also probably lover was a wonderful friend of mine. I read Freud, Jung, Reich, etc. when I was still a teenager and since she, Aniela Jaffé, lived in Zurich, I made contact which developed into friendship. Perhaps I was the youngest even who went to psychoanalysis ... She was quite old even then, a tiny, fragile Jewish woman, almost blind. And I always could tell when she had a visit from the bishop then (Jung's psychology doesn't work without the religious aspect), because there was still a bottle of cognac on the little table and she was quite tipsy. She's missed.

And if you haven't read Jung's biography 'Memories, Dreams, Reflections' yet, I highly suggest it. It seems still available in English. Another good read is 'Man and his symbols.'

24. I am opposed to any wild animal being captured solely to become a pet!
Frodo may have been brought into this world through careful breeding in another country. There was an article in Bird Talk Magazine asserting that some hatcheries are unable to ban the bird's leg with the closed ban method thereby necessitating the use of an open ban.

I am for quarantine.

I am against predation.
Birds are already becoming endangered to the point of extinction without having their nest sites destroyed by humans.

I am totally impressed by your personal knowledge of Aniela Jaffé. Thank you.

wherever Miss Frodo is coming from, you rescued her and are giving her an exceptional good life.

Aniela was a wonderful, deep deep spirited lady. She never let any excuses slip, no matter how good they were. She died in 1991.

30. She had a good way of viewing things.
Excuses rarely do work for very long.

Thank you for your thoughts about my relationship with Frodo. I think she rescued my heart. I met Frodo a month after I realized my Golden Retriever Lord Byron was nearing his end. I needed Frodo as much as she needed me.

31. Then, the bond is mutual and good.
The picture of you and Miss Frodo just tells it, there is a wonderful vibe attached to it. :)

Oh, it wasn't even the 'everyday excuses' she refused to take anyway serious, but the stuff you start to believe in is true at one point. She never let you stand still, and if you did, she forced you to walk again, mentally. Perhaps it was like an image of a room with closed doors around. She just opened one and said 'and what's this?'

Of course, she spent her whole life in the 'overwhelming' shadow of Jung, which I think she never deserved. Jung had many insights, but as a person he was - hard to describe - an intellectual bully and a typical (for the time being) Zurich patriarch. I think feminism would have scared him endlessly.
Funny though how many strong women came out of the Jungian school.

17. Thanks! She's 5 years old.
I met her when she was 11 weeks old and still learning how to stand on a perch. It was love at first sight. I visited her everyday until finally the store owner convinced me to take her home before she was weaned off hand fed formula. What a mess. I was a nervous wreck. She needed the proper amount mixture at the correct temperature. My work payed off but it wasn't easy.

19. I'm not surprised that the African Grey was bi-lingual.
My house mates Grey is almost 15. He knows what he's saying. We're all blown away by him sometimes. A few years ago he played a trick on an old chocolate lab. Kiera was tossing bits of food down to Guya. Then after he said "want some" Kiera snagged a small tea light off a window sill which he threw to the silly woobie. Kiera ran back up the side of his cage and did a parrot laugh.

Greys are very special.
I'm sorry to hear that you had to say goodbye to yours too soon, they are delicate.

The second is a Red-fronted variety. Morgan came to us after her person passed away suddenly last summer.
