Basic DU Posting Question #2 -- Smilies

Another basic DU posting question!

Now that I have figured out how to post a picture, how can I post non-DU smilies?

Where are your favorite places to find smilies?

2. Basically all you need to do is pick a topic and do a google search.

Look for the image you want and drag & drop it on DU. Some of the smiles can only be used if you capture them into your photobucket first. If you are going that route I would advise opening a sub album as you don't want to move or delete the smilie after you've posted it.

I had tried the drag an drop method with one site, but it didn't want to work.

6. Some of the images cannot be hotlinked.

They will show up as a message that "you have posted an illegal image". That's when you'll need to look for the same thing elsewhere or snag it to your computer then into your bucket.

That evil error message was the reason I had to get help posting pictures.

My photobucket will probably get more usage as a smiliebucket. :)

8. When I do my smilies searches in Google Image search

I use (blank) smilies...such as:

wow smilies
mad smilies

Found when I use the word "smilies" after the search topic word, I find a lot of sites.

I was finding a lot of sites that were about "how to make your favorite Star Trek character" with keyboard buttons. ??

Your way will probably work better. :)

13. You'll find a little more if you try both smilie and again smilies.

Then try using a word like 'rose' then add 'gif'. You'll be surprised at the difference.

5. Did I hear my name?

Ok, the first thing you'll need to do is get an account at a photo hosting service like Photobucket, which is free for the basic account. It's very easy to do, and they practically walk you through the process.

Once you have the account you simply upload your smilies into it. Whenever you want to put a smiley into a message here, copy the URL (which begins with "http") of the smiley from your Photobucket account and paste it into your message wherever you want the smiley to show up. They also show you how to do this at Photobucket.




I get my smilies from a variety of places such as from other DUers, and from sites like these:

Any smilies you like, just right click on them and save them to your hard drive. Enjoy!
