I just had my first taste of what parenting is kinda like
I had to babysit my nephster for a little bit, he's eight months old. We listened to Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline and Gordon Lightfoot's Don Quitoxe, both on vinyl. I played the mandolin for him as well (I think he liked it), then I let him try to play, but he started farting around with the tuning pegs and I was scared he'd cut himself on the strings, so I took it away.
It's wierd trying to figure out what they want when they're whinging, till I figured out he just wanted me to hold him and let him look out the window whilst chewing his bib.
Either way, it was fun... I seemed to keep him entertained for the most part. And he kept me entertained, though he really seemed overly-eager to get at my coffee.
And, with one swift kick, he almost ensured he wouldn't have any cousins.

1. Fun, isn't it?
You get good times and bad times.

The bad times will make you crazy but the good times make it all worthwhile. Personally, I always gripe when my five year old climbs in bed w/ me but the truth is I love it. I always know that she is there, snuggling down w/ me and I snuggle next to her.

I don't know who makes the other feel safer-me or her.

3. But you get all the good times at least.
Sounds like he's ready for his first hockey game soon.

I had my daughter watching when she was three weeks old.

4. That swift kick is one way nature prepares babies...
to eliminate their competitors. Wait until he learns to run into your crotch full tilt boogy! Also beware of the deadly mustache grip by those pudgy fingers. It will bring a grown man to his knees!

5. Smart move on his part - cause as long as I have no kids
ALl that hot-dog and sporting event money will be spent on him.

6. a few hours is WAY different than 24/7
I used to love seeing my little nephews on Christmas & horse around with them. But, being a full-time parent is a lot different than babysitting.

Glad you had fun, though.

7. I like how little kids are easily amused. Up til they are seducted by tv
and battery operated crap.

8. Yeah, lucky my sister doesn't allow that shit
Edited on Tue Feb-21-06 06:43 PM by HEyHEY
The kid is not allowed to watch TV unless it's hockey or something. But that's cause he's so young

9. Your nephew's a lucky fella.
I love the way you describe your interactions with him - he's a 'person' to you - not just a 'baby'. You've got the makings of a great relationship there!

10. Thanks!
I do have loads of fun with him... I almost don't want him to get older cause he's so much fun at this age.
But then I remember when he gets older I can take him to hockey games and such, which should be fun.

12. They don't need much at that age. Food, beverage, clean bottom, to be warm
and not too cold, and not to hot of course... to be visually entertained for about 15 seconds at a time, and endless kisses, hugs and silly faces.

And naps. They need naps 2 times a day and an early bedtime.

Yep, that's what babies need at that age.

14. What is it with babies and coffee?
My son makes a b-line for anyone's coffee any time he sees it.

24. Well, not here.
My 3 year old ggrandaughter loves coffee. Always has. One of the first things I gave her was a lovely old demitasse cup and tiny silver spoon. Later, I found a great restaurant (thick) demitasse set and gave it to her for 'every day'. Sure, it's mostly milk - but it lets her be one of us. (My gran did it for me and my Mom did it with my kids}.

The other day, she noticed a castle in a miniature golf course and remarked that a Princess lived in it. Asked what the Princess was doing in her castle, she said: "She's just chillin."

BTW, isn't it aout time you posted a current pic of the lad?

Yes, kids are really cool. Especially young, drooling ones.

Sometimes nothing works. And that's okay too.

A couple recent encounters have taught me chicks dig it if you talk in glowing terms about your nephew... pull out a picture, and they love it even more.

22. Ahhh...sweetness personified in a little person. You are making me
miss my little 8 month old nephew whom I have yet to meet. I was talking to his daddy on the phone yesterday, and Mr. Jacob was cooing and babbling and screeching in the background for Daddy to come play...

...I hung up in tears.

I'm glad you two had a good time. :)

28. I had a similar experience with my cousin's baby
only she kept crying no matter what I did... until I said the hell with it, tossed her in her bed and ignored her, letting her cry herself to sleep (which was probably the problem in the first place I figured in all my brilliant hindsight).
