My sweet Emma passed away this morning.
Emma, my parti-variety cocker spaniel crossed over the rainbow bridge this morning. She had been suffering from kidney failure for about 2 weeks. I had tried to help her with subcutaneous fluids that I would administer daily, but it was really too late for that. This morning, when we awoke, she had spit up some blood, and we felt it was time for one last trip to the veterinarian.

The vet told us that Emma would be gone on the count of 8, after the injection started. She was laying on a table, with me and Mr. LD holding her, right next to a large bank of animal crates. On top of the crates were some items, neatly stacked. On the count of '8', a large purple disk-like object flew down from the very top. The vet said she had never seen anything like that before. I don't know if perhaps my mother's spirit was there (her favorite color was purple), or Emma's.

I adopted Emma from Cocker Spaniel Rescue. She had such a hard life filled with abuse before she came to share my life. After several years of continued reassurance, she learned that kisses and cuddles feel good. Our time together was too short, but she was too ill. My eyes are sore from crying and my head hurts from thinking about all that has happened since this morning.

Emma

It's so hard to lose a pet, even when it is best for them to go. I have tears in my eyes from reading your story, and feeling your heartbreak.

7. I think ...
Emma was probably very grateful to have found a loving home with you. So many abused and otherwise sheltered dogs never do. Adopting a shelter dog (a labrador retriever, in my case) instead of buying a breeder one has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my life. :)

8. Lavenderdiva, I'm so sorry
Emma had the sweetest face. She also had an incredible companion.

You did something incredible for Emma...rescued her, and gave her so much love...along with that, patience...care...what a gift you were to her, and she to you.

It sounds like you both made such a difference in each other's lives.

9. Oh sweetheart, I am so sorry
My ex had to put our kitten to sleep yesterday, so I know how you are feeling.

But you gave Emma a good life - a life filled with love. That's what is important.

14. Sorry
I know what you are going thru. The last time we had to do that was with our pound hound Jessie. She was with us for 15 years. I know in my heart just as you do it was the right decision however that doesn't make the decision any easier.
You were a good pet parent and gave her love and care and stood with her until the end.
You'll be in my thoughts and prayers and so will sweet Emma.

I hope all of the good memories you have of life with Emma will help ease the grief soon

I went through the same process with my lab/shepherd mix Ranger - with the subcutaneous fluids and all of the worry. Try to remember Emma when she was healthy....

23. I'm Sorry For Your Loss...
... it's very difficult to let go of our little fur babies... our loyal companions, and loving members of our families. It's clear to me that Emma was VERY loved and well cared for. I dread the day that I'll have to make the same difficult decision you were faced with today. As hard as it must have been for you, I hope you know that you made the best possible choice... and we all know that you did it out of love and caring for Emma.

I also hope that as time goes by, the memories of happier days with Emma will bring a smile to your face and help to ease the heartbreak you're feeling today.

All the best,
~Allen

25. I'm so sorry for your loss.
I'm crying now. I understand as I had to have my "geriatric puppy," Brigit, euthanized just after Christmas, 2004. It just about broke my heart. She was a border collie or sheltie mix we adopted as an adult from the SPCA in New Orleans in 1989. They estimated at the time she was about 2 years old.
I hope she and Emma are running around, playing and chasing each other now.

27. when emma's soul jumped over the crates, she was showing off for you:
"See!~ I can jump and run again!"

Be comforted by that. It's a biggie. She must have been some dog.

33. Oh. I'm so sorry.
Thank goodness Emma got to experience what a caring home felt like.

When we had to put a kitty to sleep two years ago, the only thing that eased my pain was the thought that there was room in the house to help another one. And so we did.

34. RIP Emma
I'm sorry for your lost, at least she's not in pain anymore. I once had a dog for about 14 years or so. She was a dear, intelligent, tough and beautiful. She had a rough last year. It was sad when she went, but her pain was over. I made peace and took some small solace in that. I hope you can as well. :)
