1. Is it the thrill of competition, or the skintight suits?

2. So do I.
Especially the short track, though if the race is a long one, I start getting dizzy watching it!

That's the sport I would select if I ever contemplated trying out for the Olympics.

18. Nothing sweeter than being first on the ice after the Zamboni
And doing a lap around at speed-skating speeds, throwing one leg over the other on the turns!!! Of course, my crappy old figure skates probably were the one thing slowing me down...

7. I'm always amazed at the size of their thighs!
Each of their thighs look nearly as big as their waists!

8. If I remember, Eric Heiden's thighs WERE as big as his waist ...
Edited on Sun Feb-12-06 11:43 PM by hippiechick
... I think something close to 30 inches ? He had to have his pants specially made.
I was - and still am - in awe of a fellow Cheesehead.

:applause:

11. which skater was it who continued to race after his sister died of cancer?
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 12:12 AM by alphafemale
Because it was her dying wish he stayed or something...

Seems like he crashed that year, but came back at the next Olympics and won.

Or he may have won in a different race that same year.

12. Dan Jansen
His sister died of cancer and he skated his heart out in her memory.

He even named his daughter for her, but divorced his wife.

13. There's a very real sensation of speed with that sport
I mean, technically, luge, skeleton and bobsleds are faster, but there's something about speed skating that makes you feel the speed.

14. When they start out
they look so ponderous all bent over with their arms on their backs, loping along at the same rhythmic gait....like some strange philosophical cult or an obscure order of monk.

I love watching them!

15. There's a great deal of grace in speed skating
Especially in the distance events. They just... g l i d e.

Anyone know where there's a schedule for events televised on NBC? There's a couple I'd like to watch, but the regular TV guides just say they're gonna have this, this, this and this — they don't say what time "this" is gonna be, so you gotta sit through stupid stuff for the stuff you want to watch — which is exactly what they have in mind.

Haven't been on them at all this winter.
No racing just for fun, I do not look good in a skin suit.
