A former professor of mine taught at a girl's school in Sudan in the early to mid 1990s (and, unfortunately, he recalled many times he had to deal with girls hemorrhaging during the school day because of FGM). He was actually the one who first told me that the local culture there considered FGM not only a practice deeply rooted in culture and religion (as you correctly noted) but also one that many (if not most) in the regional culture considered a very sacred form of art.

And two of the books I read for my research which also noted FGM is considered by many cultures (particularly south African) to be a form of art (body mutilation) are "Female Genital Mutilation in Africa" by Daniel Karanja and "Female Circumcision in Africa: Culture, Controversy and Charge" by Bettina Shell-Duncan.

So you see, just because one culture considers certain heinous and barbaric practices "culture" or "art" doesn't mean it is justified or unworthy of opposition. In my opinion, bullfighting, like FGM, is barbaric, cruel, and should be stopped.

it isn't a matter of which is "worse." I consider them both abhorrent and barbaric forms of "art" and expressions of "culture", and think they should both be stopped immediately.

I guess I was just taking issue with your defending it as a form of "art" - there are many things people consider art that are disgusting and immoral.

the A-Team van, complete with large brushbreaker on front, to crash through the doors of the bullfighting ring. While Mr. T gets out, tells the matador that he "pities the fool that wants to hurt a bull...hrrrrr!" and then pants' him, right in front of everyone. In the meantime, the bull escapes.

The crowd gets a laugh, the bull is free, the matador isn't hurt (except maybe his pride). Everyone wins.
