And that's putting it mildly. I actually feel sorry for the Italian girls; 6 minutes in and Canada already has 3 goals. Ooops, make that 4 goals. Damn.

Looks like one of the Italian forwards broke her collarbone, too.

Oh, Canada!

2. Is there a 10-goal rule or anything?
The pain on the faces of the Italian skaters is killin' me. They need to end this thing.

It would be like me going into a boxing ring with Tonya Harding.

3. There's no compassion in hockey, missy!!!!
;)

It's gutsy that they have a team. :) But I know, it cannot be easy for them.

8. 5-0 at the end of the first period
Italy's no match for the Canadian women, but let's be honest, nobody can beat these ladies.

Go Canada!

Canadian women intimidate Team Italy
Last Updated: Sat Feb 11 15:12:04 EST 2006
CBC Sports

Team Canada faces a complete unknown when it starts defending its women's hockey crown at the Torino Olympic Games.

Canada begins play Saturday (CBC, 2:30 p.m. EST) against Italy, which ranks in the lowly B-bracket at the world championships.

"I've never seen them play," Canadian forward Hayley Wickenheiser admitted.

Italy is competing only because it's the host country, so is simply hoping not to be embarrassed by the powerhouse Canadians.

"I know it is going to be tough," Italian defenceman Rebecca Fiorese said. "They are as good as some Italian men's teams."

On one hand, I hope the Canadian women don't run up the score too much. On the other, a high score could intimidate the other teams.

11. 7 - 0 now.
Team Italy is made up of rookies; some of those girls are still in high school. They're just plain outclassed. And since the ranking is partly based on total points scored, the Canadiennes need to exploit that to the hilt and get as many goals as they can. It's not pretty, but it's practical.

I know they're mismatched here, but damn... I'm impressed at their speed, they seriously skate almost as fast as the men.

17. Canada won 16-0.
Out shot Italy, 66-5.

I watched a little bit of this game. It was 7-0 at the time. It looked like Canada was on a permanent power play during the game.

18. Oh, that's gonna leave a mark
As a Canadian, I'm happy they won; but man... poor Italy. However, I think the Italian women were excited to be playing - they knew they didn't stand a chance but to be involved in the Olympics must be the thrill of a lifetime.

That's painful. While Italy would be my preferred vacation spot (sorry, Canadian DUers!), in hockey, there's not even a contest. Congrats, Canada! :hi:

Everyone else flat out sucks. They should just play the gold medal game, the rest is a waste of time.

25. I guess you don't understand the way the tournament is set up.
If two teams wind up with same win-loss record, the team that scored more goals in the tourney advances and the other team goes home. The elite teams will all do the same thing.
