Does your companion animal "hug" you?
Edited on Sat Feb-11-06 02:24 PM by UTUSN
I heard somewhere that hugging, like, to a dog, is not that welcome a deal to them, that they interpret it as some negative behavior. Well, I started noticing that this little dude, when I'm sitting with him up on my stomach, LEANS on my face. He appears to be interpreting hugs as PRESSURE and returns them as LEANING/PRESSURE. No?

1. Jessie "leans" into me when she wants some loving.
I think it is hugging. Because she always has a real deep,"Gosh I love you" look on her face when she does it. :hi:

2. No, my parents' animal companion punches them in the face.
Our cat will sit on your chest while you sleep and then bat at your eye movements under your eyelids when you dream. :D

3. Well, no, because he's a cat...but he does jump onto the bed
and snuggle into wherever I'm curled up. The purring almost always awakens me, but I never have the heart to move him.

4. Charley does this
my feral rescue who isn't that affectionate most of the time came up one night and leaned against me while I was watching TV. Actually Charley has become so much less anti-social. I can pick him up and hug him and he stays for a long time now. He freaked out the first time I did this, but the other cats jump up on my chest and demand attention, so he's finally getting the idea that that is ok cat behavior. It takes time, patience and love with a rescue, but it's well worth it.

17. I've got a leaner like that
Edgar, my black and white cat, will lean against me when he wants to get my attention. His brother Leo, OTOH, is a hugger, and will curl up on me at the first chance he gets.

5. It's a negative behavior when it's used to restrain. Otherwise,
however (I think a vet named Miller did a study on it) hugging and other showings of affection, as well as talking to your companion animal actually helped make them more confident and more sociable.

Of course, before hugging an animal, you should know him/her pretty well, as they may view it as restraint or dominance.

My Dane not only leans on you, he'll sit directly on you. It's affection, I'm convinced.

6. My next door neighbor's Great Pyr/Golden Ret (RIP Alex) was
convinced that you wanted him to sit all 165 pounds of him on your lap. :hi:

I miss him. She put him down last week.

22. My dalmatian is like that. :)
She leans, sits on my lap, and will totally let me give her bear hugs. She's deaf, and deaf dogs tend to be really jumpy, but she never has been.

7. My parrot spreads her wings around me.
She cuddles with me early in the morning if I'm not sitting here chatting with DU.
If you've ever tried to get a bird to do what you want it to do you'd understand ~ she wouldn't do it the way she does if she didn't enjoy it.

BTW ~ He is very cute!

8. Lucy sometimes lays on my chest
facing me and puts her little paws up around my collarbone. She also grooms my beard and reaches out and touches my nose or lips or wraps a paw around my wrist when I skritch her belly.

Last night she lay on my upper chest and put her cheek against mine as if we were dancing.

I adore her. :loveya:

14. dogs love hugging!
if a dog could get inside your skin he/she would.

they will lean on you, jump on you, sit on you -- they love you to pieces.

your pet is without a doubt the best friend you will ever have.

15. Two pooches and two kitties
All are very affectionate. My oldest cat will come up, get close to my chest and face, then extend her leg out to hug. Younger cat wants me to hug first, then puts one of the legs up on my shoulder. The pooches jump up, give kissos, and get their paws on my shoulders. Do those actions count?

20. Angel is a hugger.

She lived down the road two years ago, always came by when I was home and made sure I paid her some attention. She almost demanded it. Her owners rental home burned down and they had to move to town. The dogs were going to the pound over my dead body! (I have six new friends due to the neighbors fire)
She will jump up and bury her neck into mine every time I let her.
