Anyone here big-time into Tangerine Dream?
For those not in the know, TD started out as a conventional rock group, but gradually switched over to the electronic side of things, concentrating more and more on synthesizers, drum machines, etc. Their music is hypnotic, complex, and EXTREMELY stoney (ok, ya made me say it).

Classified either as electronic, ambient, or new age, there's an emerging flood of such music, most of it based on they style of TD.

If you think you've never heard their stuff, you may be surprised to know they show up regularly in movie soundtracks-- a couple you may know about are LEGEND (yep, Tom Cruise's teen flick), and James Caan's THIEF. an almost complete soundtrack list can be browsed at http://perso.club-internet.fr/pfellows/films/webpages/filmlist.html in case you're interested.

Their official home page is at: http://www.tangerinedream.org/

Any fellow TD freaks? If you're not, I hope you are open-minded enough to check 'em out!

1. Sort of...
I'm a BIG fan of Christopher Franke's music for Babylon 5.
He was a member until 1987, right?
Man, did he make some great music for that show.

2. How odd--

if true, I never knew that. I never paid attention to the B5 music, as I was too deeply into the plot!

B5 Rules!

ON EDIT: Looking at their line-up listings, you are indeed correct! http://www.tangerinedream.org/mod.php?mod=userpage&menu=1003&page_id=10

6. Well, the original broadcast of the pilot was scored by Stewart Copeland..
of the Police, and it had a funky guitar, rock theme that had no place in the epic theme of the series.
But some particular musical scores of the series you should pay attention to are in the second and third seasons:

Season 2, Episode 20: "The Long, Twilight Struggle"
Season 3, Episode 10: "Severed Dreams" (Star Trek was NEVER as good as this episode, and that's saying something, 'cause I like Trek, too.)
Season 3, Episode 22: "Z'Ha'Dum"
Season 5, Episode 22: "Sleeping in Light" (Magnificent, but very, very sad.)

I know way too much about this series, don't I?

7. I have a B5 screensaver with that guitar track on it
and always wished I knew who played it! I LOVE that tune!

And you can NEVER know too much about that series-- IMHO it's better than Trek ever was (sacrelidge??)!!

9. Hrmmm...when did you get that screensaver?
'Cause if you got it early, then it was Copeland...not sure if Franke included a guitar in his scores.
And I gotta say that yeah, it was better than Trek ever could dream of being...
Although DS9 came close when they started using story arcs.

10. The screensaver is an unauthorized bootleg
someone posted on usenet a couple years ago-- I never knew who it was, and I've never redistributed it to anyone. It has ALL the theme songs on it, including the original, with Molari talking over it. I just like the guitar-based theme best.

11. Neato...
I actually spent money on the single episode soundtracks...two of them, to be exact. I was pleasantly surprised.

In case you haven't figured it out I have no idea what y'all are talking about. But maybe that's where they got their name from...

8. Went through a big TD phase in the early 90s
Still listen to them on occasion. I love "Canyon Dreams," "Lily On The Beach," "Rockoon" and the soundtrack from the film, "Miracle Mile."

Oh, and "Optical Race" is fun, too.

12. I love their movie scores
IIRC, they did "The Keep" "The Bounty" "The Year of Living Dangerously" "Bladerunner" "Missing" and probably quite a few more good ones.

13. I thought Vangelis did Bladerunner?
I have the soundtrack somewhere, and I'm pretty sure it was him. Excellent flick, BTW.

14. Love them
I spent lots of teenage time "relaxing" to Tangerine Dream. One of the strangest experiences I had was hearing "Coldwater Canyon" on a mall's sound system in the late 70s

15. Big fan

but mainly of their earlier stuff. They seemed to be putting out roughly an album a week a few years ago, and while I liked it, it was starting to all sound the same.

That said, I've been into TD since around 1976. Saw them twice in the DC area, once at the Warner theater in the mid-80's (around the time "Underwater Sunlight" came out) and then at the Kennedy Center in the late 80's or early 90's (with Andy Summers from the Police as the opening act). Both shows were fantastic.

I've got most of their stuff (or at least a lot of their stuff) on CD now, including the Dream Roots Collection (definitely worthwhile). I'm partial to "Phaedra", "Rubycon", etc., although currently the live album "Poland" is high on my list of favorites.

On Edit: I almost forgot -- I have the DVD of "Oasis", which is a really cool set of video footage of the American Southwest with TD soundtracks. Excellent stuff.

16. You saw 'em? I'm jealous!
I'd KILL to see 'em live. Haven't they stopped touring in the USA for the duration of the shitstorm, along with most really good European groups, such as Golden Earring (my lifetime favorite rock group)? I thought I'd read something about it, but I could be wrong...

17. They were supposed to play this past winter
I saw that they were suppsoed to be at the Birchmere in Northern Virginia, but cancelled. I never heard an official reason, but I guess the impending war would have been a good one.

I'm curious if they're still as good live as they were back then.

When I saw them, they were into lasers and fog and stuff to add to the "spacey" feel, but I read that in the early seventies they once gave a concert in total darkness. Now THAT would be interesting!
